AT&T is the first North American telco to earn Cisco Systems' Quality of Service certification for metropolitan Ethernet.

The companies announced Tuesday that the certification acknowledges that AT&T's OPT-E-MAN managed optical transfer service meets Cisco's specifications.

OPT-E-MAN's switched Ethernet provides service for multiple business customers in a metro area at speeds between 5 megabits per second and 1 gigabit per second. The network runs over Cisco's 7600 series routers installed at AT&T central offices and 3550 series switches deployed along the network edge.

The system currently operates in 19 U.S. cities, ranging in size from Los Angeles and Chicago to Green Bay, Sacramento and Austin.
