Verizon Wireless 4G LTE data service disruption spread across the United States and lasted several hours but subscribers remained able to make voice calls and exchange text messages using smartphones on the network.
Verizon's previous generation 3G data network continued to operate normally, according to the New York-based company.
The nationwide disruption was the second this month and prompted analysts to suspect that Verizon is grappling with unexpected engineering kinks in the trail-blazing 4G network it began rolling out a year ago.
Verizon launched 4G service in December 2010, boasting that it delivers data as much as 10 times faster than 3G technology used by smartphones or tablet computers.
