Hewlett-Packard will design its new laptop computers to connect to third-generation wireless networks worldwide.

HP will be building Cingular Wireless BroadConnect capabilities into its laptops so travelers can hook up to wireless service in the United States and more than 100 other countries where GPRS/EDGE or UMTS wireless networks are available.

UMTS is a global standard for 3G and provides download speeds between 400 and 700 kilobits per second.

The laptop partnership is the latest HP-Cingular wireless project; HP has offered Cingular-enabled modem cards and handheld wireless devices built for 3G.
