Microsoft Thursday said it will contest a decision by the European Commission to impose backdated fines.

The commission had ordered the software giant to change its business practice and comply with the antitrust sanctions as set by the European Union. If the ruling goes ahead Microsoft will be responsible for paying the daily fines retroactively since March 2004.

Microsoft's general counsel said in a news release that the company had been committed to abiding by the commission's rules and had already paid hefty fines in complying with the European rules.

He added, however, that it will contest the latest statement by the commission.
