Legislation to convert the U.S. market to high-definition digital television by 2009 was approved Monday by the House of Representatives.
Lawmakers approved a $1.5 billion fund to help consumers buy converter boxes so that they can continue to get TV reception once analog transmissions by networks end.
The House's approval paves the way for part of analog airwaves to be auctioned off to private wireless companies, and the revenue from the sales could beef up the government's coffers.
