It integrates continuum mechanics, rheology, thermodynamics, seismology, and structural geology to quantify stress, strain, and material properties in tectonic settings such as plate boundaries, continental interiors, and subduction zones. Research in tectonophysics addresses phenomena including faulting, folding, lithospheric flexure, mountain building, and basin formation, often using numerical modeling, laboratory rock deformation experiments, and geodetic and seismic observations to constrain constitutive laws and geodynamic models.
