Hidden molecular switch controls taste, metabolism and gut function
Northwestern University scientists have uncovered a hidden molecular "control switch" inside a protein that helps the body sense taste, control blood sugar and defend the gut.
Molecular biology is a discipline within the life sciences that investigates biological processes at the level of molecules, primarily nucleic acids and proteins. It focuses on the mechanisms of DNA replication, repair, recombination, transcription, and RNA processing, as well as translation and post-translational modification of proteins. Molecular biology integrates concepts and methods from biochemistry, genetics, and cell biology, employing techniques such as cloning, PCR, sequencing, gene editing, and transcriptomic and proteomic profiling. It underpins contemporary research in areas including gene regulation, signal transduction, developmental biology, pathogen–host interactions, and the molecular basis of disease.
