Dysprosium is a lanthanide series rare-earth element (atomic number 66) with partially filled 4f orbitals that confer high magnetic moment and strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy, making it critical in high-performance permanent magnets and magnetostrictive materials. It exhibits multiple stable oxidation states, most commonly +3 in ionic compounds, and forms complex coordination environments relevant to materials chemistry and solid-state physics. Dysprosium-containing alloys and oxides are investigated for their thermal neutron absorption cross-sections in nuclear technology, as well as for their optical and luminescent properties in photonics, where f–f electronic transitions enable applications in lasers, phosphors, and quantum information research.
