Daimler delivers its first all-electric trucks in Europe

German carmaker Daimler on Thursday delivered its first fully electric lorries to companies in Europe, as the global race to mass produce the first generation of "green trucks" heats up.

Among the first customers for Daimler's Fuso eCanter light-weight truck was express delivery service DHL, which said it would use its six vehicles to navigate Berlin's innercity traffic.

The keys to eight other eCanter trucks were handed over to German logistics and transport firms DB Schenker, Rhenus and Dachser.

"With the Fuso eCanter our customers now operate not only quietly and without locally emitted CO2, they also save money on operating costs," said Marc Llistosella, head of Daimler Trucks Asia.

"This is the future of urban distribution transport."

With a load-bearing capacity of 4.5 tons, the eCanter is equipped with six batteries and has a range of 100 kilometres (62 miles), the Mercedes Benz parent company said.

Package-shipping giant UPS has put eCanter trucks on the road in the United States, while in Japan convenience-store chain Seven-Eleven and Yamato Transport will each operate 25 of the trucks, according to Daimler.

Large-scale production of the fully electric, zero-emissions truck is set to begin in 2019.

Daimler's announcement comes as carmakers and tech firms around the world jostle for dominance in the rush to meet a growing demand for clean, quiet delivery trucks as cities grapple with smog and noise pollution.

Tesla last month unveiled an all electric semi-truck that it billed as quicker and more economical than today's diesel-powered trucks.

It can travel 800 kilometres between charges. Production however is not set to start until 2019, with the first deliveries slated for 2020.

Volkswagen, Nikola and Einride are also among the pioneers in developing electric truck prototypes, some equipped with autonomous driving functions and futuristic designs.

Daimler did not disclose the price of its eCanter, but said the vehicle offered "savings up to 1,000 euros per 10,000 kilometres on operating costs" in comparison with conventional trucks.

Models destined for European and US clients will be produced in Tramagal, Portugal.

Before the entire industry begin building only ZEV; one should ask when will countries begin building the necessary infrastructure to support millions of ZEV which require a tremendous increase to the power grid of each country as well as recharging stalls or Hydrogen so that this can be accomplished as simple as going to a gas station.. unless the ZEV is a fuel cell vehicle that consumes either gas or diesel.

It is beginning. We have two EVs now and charge them at home but can get charging all over, some of it free, especially for the Tesla.

These are just examples of what is happening around the world. Much charging will be done at night - when there is surplus energy on the grid already. We owned a Nissan Leaf for a year. Charged it every night at home.
Every time a new house is built - it has to be supplied with electricity. But no one starts screaming about the grid. Utilities are loving the idea of car charging - as they can sell their surplus power at night - and increase their income. More tax revenue too.

If you do the calcs then that 'tremendous increase' is actually quite tame. If you were e.g. to replace every car with an EV then the additional electricity demand would be about 15% over the current one.
Since the changeover till everyone drives fully electric is likely to be sometime in the 2050's that's a quite easy target to reach.

Many industrial countries already have a good chunk of that kind of capacity in place since the current ,inflexible, powerplant/powerline infrastructure requires constant overproduction. With EVs connected that can be buffered and that is no longer needed (or at the very least greatly reduced).

as simple as going to a gas station

EVs are even simpler, because the average user (including truckers) *never* has to go to a power station. Such vehicles charge over night at home/at the company site.

Once you have an EV you will notice how much time you were wasting driving to/from gas stations, putting stuff in the tank (potentially freezing your buns off in the process), standing in line waiting to pay, ...

Today Tesla comes in to design the household batttery system we are installing with no subsidies.

But SUBSIDIES? Is your car a gas polluter? Do you know how much we give away in subsidies to oil and gas?

Taxpayers pay for your electricity

Nope. The buyer pays for it. It's part of the price package for an EV.

ICE drivers get their waste disposal for free (which everyone else pays for in terms of healthcare bills and taxes for mitigating damages due to climate change like helping out farmers struck by drought or shoring up high water protection in cities).
They are also the cause why everyone has to pay such huge amounts of taxes because it is needed for the military budget to ensure that the oil flows.

So if anyone is the parasite it is them.

One should ask why you think you are the only person this has occurred to, or why the people developing this tech haven't already considered it and are planning for it?

Tesla does not want to rule the world, Musk wants to change it.

He gave away his patents to anybody who wanted them.

He is a liberal who thinks we are all in this together not a conservative intent on "getting his".
