Using fluctuating wind power

Incorporating wind power into existing power grids is challenging because fluctuating wind speed and direction means turbines generate power inconsistently. Coupled with customers' varying power demand, many wind-farm managers end up wasting power-generation capacity and limiting the service life of turbines through active control – including fully stopping turbines – in order to avoid any possible damage to the power grid from spikes in supply.

In a paper published in the American Institute of Physics' Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, researchers propose a new strategy to optimize power-generation efficiency and so better control .

The new strategy is based on continuous predictions of how fluctuating winds affect each turbine's maximum generation capacity. It also incorporates factors missing in other wind-farm control strategies, including differing power generation between turbines, actual fluctuations in , errors in prediction, communication disruptions preventing active control, and even turbines without the capacity for continuous active control. To demonstrate the feasibility of the new strategy, the researchers compared their predictions to raw data from a single wind turbine. The team then further refined their calculations and simulated a control operation with data from a wind farm of 33 turbines.

The results suggest that wind-farm managers can improve their power-generation efficiency with the new strategy. However, the researchers caution that before implementing the strategy, each wind-farm manager should adjust the underlying parameters – such as how often to adjust each turbine's speed – based on local conditions.

People back in 1700-1800 realised wind power was crap, and that's why they tore down most windmills.

Now we have a new league of pseudoscience that wants to bring them all back.

Wind power is ugly, destroys wildlife, heavily expensive to maintain, requires large land masses, requires regulation, has moving parts and needs constant servicing. I could go on.

The point is, more realistic renewable sources of energy are solar, and hydro, and even geothermal. Instead for some bizarre reason most countries have decided to inundate all areas of land left with these infernal pieces of crap. The amount near me that have had blades snapped, bent, and ripped off, and needed fixing, I am wondering if the costs and resources used to build and maintain genuinely offset the alternatives? I highly doubt it.

Seems to me in 2050 or so we'll have massive tax fines so governments can clear up 4 billion tons of scrap windfarm metal.

Solar, hydro and geothermal, they work better and dont kill

Modern wind turbines don't kill anymore wild life then any other obstruction in the air. Birds can actually land on spinning blades of modern wind turbines. Birds fly into widows should we remove all windows? Transportation kills million times more wildlife then wind turbines therefore we should go back walking long distances?

The great planes have enough wind to supply the entire US with electricity.

Land under wind turbines usable for many purposes ie:farming vs. solar N hydro.

Wind power is a lot more efficient per area then current solar and works at night.

Wind turbines look a lot better then many dams that generate hydro power and destroy entire eco systems.

Once we have better alternatives we simply remove the wind turbines without any disturbance to land. Try removing a dam!

what these wind farms need is smth like an "electrical dam", which stores excess and send to the grid without fluctuations. Unfortunately i have no idea how such a concept could be applied to electricity....
