First EPR nuclear reactor goes on stream in China

A third generation EPR nuclear reactor in China started providing power to the grid on Friday, a first for the new-generation technology, joint venture partners CGN and EDF said.

The European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) in Taishan, southern China, "became the first EPR in the world to be successfully connected to the grid", they said.

The reactor using the much-delayed European EPR technology had carried out its first earlier this month.

China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) owns 51 percent of the reactor, French utility EDF 30 percent and Chinese provincial company Yuedian 19 percent.

With EPRs in Finland and France facing setbacks, the Taishan 1 reactor in Guangdong province is the first of its kind to advance to the operational stage.

The reactor will now undergo a period of gradual power-up tests, and then will be tested in steady-state conditions at full power, the statement said.

A second reactor, Taishan 2, run by the same partners, is expected to enter service next year.

The dates for both reactors to start working had been pushed back several times.

"Local defects" were found last year in Taishan 1's deaerator, a device used to remove oxygen from water circuits.

Last September Britain gave the green light, with conditions, to EDF and CGN to build another such reactor at Hinkley Point in southwest England, after a heated debate which included worries over China's involvement.

That reactor is not expected to be completed until the mid 2020s.

All new nuclear reactors should be based on Thorium. They cannot have a "meltdown". It's foolish to the extreme to continue using uranium based reactors which leave considerable contaminated spent fuel rods and support equipment to be guarded for thousands of years. The thorium reactor leaves virtually no dangerous by products to be "taken care of". They are also NOT a source of plutonium which can be used for bombs! This is proven technology that is being thwarted by the existing industry built around the "old technology". Wake up world! Ensure all new reactors are thorium based. Make our world safer in many ways.

The thorium reactor leaves virtually no dangerous by products to be "taken care of".

Regular reactors using Thorium are no more cleaner than running on uranium, because the reactor is breeding Uranium-233 out of the Thorium. All Thorium reactors are by principle breeder reactors. Non-breeder reactors need Uranium-235 on the side to work.

There is less waste, but its a bit more difficult to handle because it's more active. The manufacture and recycling of Thorium for fuel is more expensive, which puts it at an economic disadvantage against Uranium and that's the biggest reason why it's not been used.

They are also NOT a source of plutonium which can be used for bombs!

But U-233 makes bombs as well.

Fusion and thorium promoters claim fission waste is dangerous.
Solar/wind promoters claim fusion an thorium wastes are equally dangerous because they are nuclear too.
In practice, commercial fission waste has killed no one, it is tiny and safely stored, and emits less radiation than a bunch of bananas, while wastes from windmills and solar panels are full of arsenides and other chemical carcinogens that never lose their toxicity with time and are dumped directly into the environment with no regulations.
