Post-apocalyptic adventure "Fallout 3" has been crowned Game of the Year at a major gathering of videogame makers in San Francisco.

The captivating story-driven videogame made by Bethesda Softworks bested blockbuster rivals including notorious "Grand Theft Auto: IV" and zombie shooter "Left 4 Dead" at the 9th annual Choice Awards.

"It's the first time we've ever won this award, and to be given it by other developers, with so many amazing games that could have won, well, we're simply overjoyed," Bethesda game director Todd Howard said Thursday.

"It's very special to us."

"" also won a Best Writing award at Wednesday's ceremony, considered a highlight of the Game Developers Conference (GDC).

Sony-backed "LittleBigPlanet" developed by Media Molecule of Britain ended the evening with the most awards, capturing top spots for game design technology, innovation, and Best Debut Game.

LittleBigPlanet encourages people to create and share games as well as play.

The latest "Prince of Persia" release by hot French videogame maker Ubisoft won a Best Visual Arts category for "hauntingly beautiful" imagery. "God of War: Chains of Olympus" was declared Best Handheld Game.

"The games being recognized here are virtuoso efforts that have truly advanced the state of video games." said GDC content director Meggan Scavio.

"The Game Developers Conference has become the premiere videogame award show because it gives voice to those who understand games better than anyone; the people who make them."

Got a nominee?

Fallout 3 is on my list, waiting for a sale on Steam - Too bad it's yet another victim of "Games for Windows Live."

I love Left 4 Dead, but I'm not sure it's Game of Year Material in the sense of such limited content.

Seems like 2008 was a bit light in video game releases.

Check The Witcher (Enhanced Edition) if you have not yet.

Right, right... let's see what you said. You said, in effect, "I disagree." Of course, you took out the "I" because you wanted to sound more objective, even absolute ("game of the year it wasn't."), but it was all about you. You provide no basis for your opinion, no underlying rationale... nothing. You didn't even offer a suggestion of what the game of the year should have been. Why? Because your post to call attention to yourself, not to say anything worthwhile.

Your post was all about you. Not about the article or even the game. Now, your defense is all about you taking umbrage that anyone would dare criticize you for a self-centered comment.

Oh, and thanks for the one star, babe. (And for the love of god, would you please spell-check!)

Funny you should say that, I was told by a friend recently that Witcher was the best game he's ever played. Maybe I'll make a trip by Wal-Mart after work today.

Um yeah, I was giving my opinion, how could it have NOT been about me smart guy?

You provide no basis for your opinion, no underlying rationale... nothing. You didn't even offer a suggestion of what the game of the year should have been.

Again I didn't know it was necessary to do so in order to give or have an opinion. Oh wait, it ISN'T.

Why?

Now you're actually going to have the gall to put words in my mouth after berating me for giving my OWN personal opinion?

Because your post to call attention to yourself, not to say anything worthwhile.

Yep you did....

Your post was all about you. Not about the article or even the game. Now, your defense is all about you taking umbrage that anyone would dare criticize you for a self-centered comment.

Yeah I take umbrage at someone criticizing me as to HOW I need to format my posts or opinions. Who are you besides an armchair psychologist wannabe? The physorg composition police?

You just got called out because you were being abysmally rude, and then YOU took umbrage at someone pointing that out.

Oh, and thanks for the one star, babe.

No problem, have another richly deserved one...

Fallout 3 was good and compared to the other games that came out, it was GotY material.

If it came out last year, well, it wouldn't have even been in the running.

Aye Fallout 3 was quite good but hardly the best game of '08 imo. Where did Call of Duty come in? That must've been the most popular shooter of '08!!

It's also the most re-hashed game of all time.
