A cataclysmic event of a certain age

At the end of the Pleistocene period, approximately 12,800 years ago—give or take a few centuries—a cosmic impact triggered an abrupt cooling episode that earth scientists refer to as the Younger Dryas.

New research by UC Santa Barbara geologist James Kennett and an international group of investigators has narrowed the date to a 100-year range, sometime between 12,835 and 12,735 years ago. The team's findings appear today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The researchers used Bayesian statistical analyses of 354 dates taken from 30 sites on more than four continents. By using Bayesian analysis, the researchers were able to calculate more robust age models through multiple, progressive statistical iterations that consider all related age data.

"This range overlaps with that of a platinum peak recorded in the Greenland ice sheet and of the onset of the Younger Dryas climate episode in six independent key records," explained Kennett, professor emeritus in UCSB's Department of Earth Science. "This suggests a causal connection between the and the Younger Dryas cooling."

In a previous paper, Kennett and colleagues conclusively identified a thin layer called the Younger Dryas Boundary (YDB) that contains a rich assemblage of high-temperature spherules, melt-glass and nanodiamonds, the production of which can be explained only by cosmic impact. However, in order for the major impact theory to be possible, the YDB layer would have to be the same age globally, which is what this latest paper reports.

"We tested this to determine if the dates for the layer in all of these sites are in the same window and statistically whether they come from the same event," Kennett said. "Our analysis shows with 95 percent probability that the dates are consistent with a single cosmic impact event."

All together, the locations cover a huge range of distribution, reaching from northern Syria to California and from Venezuela to Canada. Two California sites are on the Channel Islands off Santa Barbara.

However, Kennett and his team didn't rely solely on their own data, which mostly used radiocarbon dating to determine date ranges for each site. They also examined six instances of independently derived age data that used other dating methods, in most cases counting annual layers in ice and lake sediments.

Two core studies taken from the Greenland ice sheet revealed an anomalous platinum layer, a marker for the YDB. A study of tree rings in Germany also showed evidence of the YDB, as did freshwater and marine varves, the annual laminations that occur in bodies of water. Even stalagmites in China displayed signs of abrupt climate change around the time of the Younger Dryas cooling event.

"The important takeaway is that these proxy records suggest a causal connection between the YDB event and the Younger Dryas cooling event," Kennett said. "In other words, the impact event triggered this abrupt cooling.

"The chronology is very important because there's been a long history of trying to figure out what caused this anomalous and enigmatic cooling," he added. "We suggest that this paper goes a long way to answering that question and hope that this study will inspire others to use Bayesian statistical analysis in similar kinds of studies because it's such a powerful tool."

I guess the most important question now would be, "Are there any clues in the YDB layer to tell us where the impactor, or its largest remnants if an airburst, may have landed?"

Clearly, if this theory is true, then the impactor hit in or very near North America, since it seems to have caused firestorms here. However, I would hope that there would be some sort of chemical, radiological, or other geologic signature (in the granules or nano-diamonds for instance) to indicate where on the Earth those materials may have been ejected from, and thereby find the crater or its remnants. I know this can be done and has been done in the case of volcanoes, famously identifying the source of the Toba eruption, for example, so it would seem that a similar technique ought to be employed to try and trace the region the trace materials have originated from.

Oh, it is that time of year again, isn't it?

Just as a reminder, there isn't any evidence for an impact: "Iridium, magnetic minerals, microspherules, carbon, and nanodiamonds are all subject to differing interpretations as to their nature and origin, and may be explained in many cases by purely terrestrial or non-catastrophic factors.[34]" [ https://en.wikipe...pothesis ]

And of course, since this is a crackpot theory, the usual suspects have turned up. Well, at least we test the crackpot classification of these individuals very robustly on phys.org. =D

I seldom disagree with you, Torbjorn, but to say that "there isn't any evidence" is an overstatement. I think that what you mean is that there is no CONCLUSIVE evidence, or no UNAMBIGUOUS evidence.

For example, the best study I have seen on the Greenland Pt spike (http://www.ncbi.n...3740870/ ) says:

Whereas the highly fractionated Pt/Ir ratio rules out mantle or chondritic sources of the Pt anomaly, it does not allow positive identification of the source. Circumstantial evidence such as very high, superchondritic Pt/Al ratios associated with the Pt anomaly and its timing, different from other major events recorded on the GISP2 ice core such as well-understood sulfate spikes caused by volcanic activity and the ammonium and nitrate spike due to the biomass destruction, hints for an extraterrestrial source of Pt.

That the evidence is not conclusive does not mean that no evidence exists.

Did you tell them you know what youre talking about because you once watched an SR71 crash while standing on the roof of a hangar?

Elsewheres. Where I was at the time has nothing to do with what I post, nor my ability to check what you post and find out that a great deal of it is rubbish.

I am not defending gkam - I just pointed out that a PARTICULAR attack of yours is was illogical.

In this case you were repeatedly pressing gkam to answer what the link between two things was as if he had linked them, when it was actually YOU who had made a comment linking them. That is illogical.

I don't recall defending gkam before (nor was I now), but I would if I felt that it were justified - do you have an example?

I judge each comment on its own merits rather than holding a grudge against a commenter; gkam has made some silly comments, but he has also made good comments, and I often give sporadic good comments good marks to encourage commenters to raise their game.

As for laughing, I DID chuckle when I read your original question about whether gkam told them that he'd seen an SR71 crash, because it DID point out a tendency of his.

And when 3 TIMES you highlighted the craters / spy plane link as if gkam actually HAD linked the craters with watching the crash, I laughed again because it looked like your comment was so 'gkamish' that you thought that gkam had actually said it rather than you...

RS,
I'll send you the story if you want. It was early January, and our sole XB-70 was out, after the loss of Air Vehicle 2 on June 8, 1966. They were only taxi tests, but it was the only bird we had left, so I went to the roof of the Maintenance and Modification Hangar to watch. While the XB-70 sat on a taxiway, . and sat, and sat, a Blackbird looked like it was doing touch-and-goes, on our 15,000-foot runway. (They were really braking tests) But one time, he just kept rolling and rolling, off the runway onto the lakebed. The gear collapsed on the overrun, and a spray of kicked-up lakebed sand and dirt and salt trailed behind like wakes. - contd

Immediately the pilot jettisoned the canopy, then he put his hands on on the edges of the cockpit and pushed himself up, then out, jumping and running clear of the right wing while it was still sliding to a stop. Right then, the Blackbird exploded, flattening the pilot face-down.
Since Air Vehicle 1 was there, our H-21 rescue bird was airborne, and landed, picked him up, and took him off, and it all happened an a few minutes. The experimental bomber did nothing that day.

Next time I went up to watch Air Vehicle 1 do "braking tests" (like the Blackbird?). After much fussing around, it started from right to left, down the 15,000 foot runway, almost immediately leaving a huge trail of fire and smoke longer than the Mach Three Bomber itself. They found me up there, and I (and many others of my rank) walked that 15,000 feet, looking for XB-70 scraps.

But I see it does hint that you dropped out of the college before you graduated.

Oh yeah, the picture don't say nothing like that either. There nothing on that shows who took him, where they took him, or when they took him or even who it is in the picture. All he shows is some Skippy smoking a cigarette wearing a really silly looking hat. I can see now why you want the pointy one from physorg,

Is that the best "proofs" you got Cher? That's exactly what I told you before was not any proof at all. Send something better if you are going to waste my time.

@ glam-Skippy. Cher you really are wasting my time with foolishment. A picture of a check (that might be done with the photo-thing-Skippy on a computer) that don't say what it is for, why you got him, or what you did for him.

All it really has to say is about 5 or 4 years ago somebody call Smithsonian Enterprising gave you $500 for some reason.

A picture of a check is proof on nothing other than you might have got $500 about 5 or 4 years ago, maybe you fell down on their steps and threatened to sue them.

Either you are really bad at this, or you are on purpose seeing how much of my time you waste. Like I told you, your proof is proof of nothing.

I sent you the pdf of the base paper of the Air Force Flight Test Center announcing I earned the Airman of the Month. Why do you ignore that and concentrate on what was going to be sent later? You cannot face it, Ira, your little ego will not let you admit it.

That was the first post, but your pathetic response was worse than I had expected. You will always try to find something to bitch about, because you are ignorant of the field, and your ego demands it. I was going to send you the incident bought by Smithsonian Air and Space, but not now. You'll have to wait until it is published and buy a copy.

I have never seen anyone go to the lengths to defend a false persona as this person has.

Pseudologia fantastica mixed with narcissism, baked in the anonymity of the internet, produces some very sad results.

In the case of this person, the topic of the article is lost very soon, and the narcissistic beast feasts on the negative attention, all the while creating more reason for the negative attention.

This person is a very sad study in how ugly the internet can be. One's humanistic pity wants to offer mercy, but when they bring it on themselves, only tough love will prevail.

"The Difference Between Pathological and Compulsive Liar
Many people get these two confused because they are similar. A pathological liar, also known as a sociopath, is quite different from a compulsive liar. Oh yeah, he sent me a picture of a check too but it didn't say what he was for.

Oh, and add names to that list of 'references' on your site that you obviously made up yourself.

I have not been able to see that one yet but I want to see him.

" And he sent me some pictures of some guys wearing really funny looking hats."
------------------------------

Not being familiar with the uniforms in the War, this goober tries to be funny. All those guys whose names are on the wall won't think it's funny.

" I would if I were wearing you shoes Cher."
---------------------------------

Yeah, shoes would be novel to you, wouldn't they?

Toots, you challenged me and I delivered, and all you can do is to try to misrepresent it, and attempt to save your little ego.

Sorry, Catfish, but you played your little game here and lost. You assumed I was one of you cowards hiding behind pseudonyms.

Who are you? Send me your Big Boat license. I think you only got a pirogue.

Trying to fill your shoes would be really the "novel' thing for me, eh Cher?

Toots, you challenged me and I delivered, and all you can do is to try to misrepresent it, and attempt to save your little ego.

You delivered nothing Cher. No job references, nothing telling about all those things you "did". And I did not misrepresent any thing. The stuffs you sent were exactly what I said. "Proofs" science articles about you or diplomas for the degrees you claimed. Newspaper articles about all those things you did (not one about $35 and a free meal from the Rotory Club.)

I don't have to attempt to save anything Cher. I do not care enough about what the peoples here think to attempt any thing.

I'll P.S. you for the rest because I don't want to run out letters.

You only ask me that about 12 or 11 times now. I am Ira-Skippy, no more and no less either.

Send me your Big Boat license.

Why would I do that Cher. You really do think us coonasses is stupid don't you?

I think you only got a pirogue.

Yeah, I got that. And another boat of my own too. What does that matter to anybody but me?

"I feel sorry for you."

Irrelevant: You do not exist, you're an anonymous pseudonym in cyberspace.

Basic human emotion may be the first thing you need to open your heart to.

If you cannot even believe that others care about you, even ones that only see your sad behavior and feel pity with no obligation to an exertion to help, then you will not care about yourself; hence the lying.

Why did your wife leave you?

What happened to your mother? Why did she leave you before teaching you common decency?

Nope. You are hiders, cowering behind phony names, thinking how smart you are, anonymously, . . because you are SCARED.

You folk like to quote psychology, not seeing the irony, while you feverishly look up arguments, . . . which describe you.

I did not quote nothing of the kind me non. And I can not be describing me because I am not the one who pretends to be the scientist engineer masters and senior special researcher to try to make up for the foolish things I say. I always say right up front that I am not the scientist engineer or even the science smart Skippy. I always say up front that I could get some things wrong.

I am going to have to P.S. you again Skippy because I got more to say to you couyon.

What the heck do you think I got to be scared of? Some simple minded couyon like you? You got nothing P'tit Boug, nothing to be scared of. What you think you can do to me that I should be afraid for?

Foolish-Cher, what ever I do tonight, tomorrow or ten or nine years from now is stuffs you have no way of having any effection on it non.

Now either get happy with that silly looking pointy cap you are wearing because it is your own permanent attiree whenever I am around or go away till you get new name and hope I don't recognize you using it

If bringing up my mame is the best you got then get ready for the Ira-Skippy to make you the misere.

Ira - I think gkam was referring to Denglishes' mom, not yours.
And Denglish has been chasing gkam around other places with stupid psychology symptoms too.

Why the hell it matters what someone elses' "real" name is online is beyond me.
If they answer to the name, that is who they are.

Thanks for the entertaining posts Ira, I find it refreshing that you never try to pretend to be someone or something you aren't. Have a good day.

gkam - If you find yourself disagreeing or arguing with everyone on a comments site, perhaps it is not everyone elses fault. No-one cares who you are. No-one cares who you are. No-one cares who you are.

@ Estevan-Skippy. You are probably right. I got the Denglish-Skippy on the "Don't Show Me This" list so I have not seen his stuffs. glam-Skippy still should learn to do the @ thing or at least the "quote these words" thing so there won't be any confusions.

@ glam-Skippy. If what Estevan-Skippy says is true and you were not talking about MY mame, then I am sorta sorry about thinking you said that to me. You still shouldn't swing at peoples mames though, it is even worse than using the bad language and words. So I apologize for that.

Not for not believing you though. You really should have some things better than the 50 year old news letter and some pictures and a check for I don't know what. Most peoples really do have professional papers and diplomas and real newspaper articles written about all the great things they did if they really did them.

Wrong. It is a wise and prudent precaution in the age of hackers and identity theft.
Heard of those, O old but not wise one?

It also provide a description of a persons' interests, background, or sense of identity.
gkam IS a pseudonym!
So is the nickname of a pilot on an airplane. Are they scared?
Do you go into other peoples, houses and rearrange their furniture?
You seem to have trouble with the most basic principle of the internet and web.
Privacy. People use nicknames for their own reasons.

If you don't like arguing and with a person with a nickname or "pseudonym" then quit fucking arguing and fighting.

Like many,I have a LinkedIn profile, with correct names, addresses, contacts, etc.
How smart would it be to give it out to the same people that I argue with on the internet?

Oh, stop it. I mentioned my experiences and otto challenged me over and over, for months now. I thought I was coming onto a site for professionals, not little egos. Gkam mumbles:" I mentioned my experiences and otto challenged me over and over, for months now."
Perhaps you should stop mentioning your "experiences" then.

"I thought I was coming onto a site for professionals, not little egos."
There are a great variety of people that visit this site, most don't pollute the comments section with their own self-aggrandizement. Little egos are preferable to enormous egos like yours.

"These folk accuse me of having their character."
Is that character both pouty and egotistical? Insulting everyone is not an endearing character.

"When they challenged my assertions, I finally sent proof and they got huffy, belittling it."
No-one cares who you are. Ira and others don't sound huffy to me. It is a persons right to think whatever they want of another.

On Physorg there are men and women of all ages, nationalities, social ranks and education levels. Why would I care much about who they are? After all, this place is not about them! Some people I enjoy, some others a bit less, idiots are on my ignore list. This is not your case G sometime you make interesting comments... when you do not talk about yourself.

...

This place is a science news aggregator. I come here because I like reading science articles and I like to comment on them. Sometimes I react on others comments; like now. What is the subject (The title of this article)? Ah yes, A cataclysmic event of a certain age. So far, the comments following this article are all about you G. Are you really a cataclysmic event of a certain age? I know, you are 71 and you have seen a plane crash; that was not your fault G, so stop making a cataclysm out of it. Of course I am joking, I hope you do not mind that.

Hey G, I do not want to pick a fight with you, I am just commenting on the subject. What is the subject again? Oh yes, the brouhaha around you. Let's put it this way, if you try to give yourself more importance than the article, you might end up being the subject of the comment section; you might like this but I don't.

Don't be naive, don't let yourself provoked.
It is not advised to share your private data on the internet. People who are provoking you may be simple comenters or even spies.
Sharing your life stories is another subject. You are free to do it if site moderators allow off-topic comments. I personally always enjoyed reading personal stories in addition to on-topic coments, because they make all this virtual interaction more humane, but we are not all the same.

Plus we now know that you lied about your MS. Everybody will be reminded of this every time you claim it in the future.

You are not nearly as smart as you think you are. You cant LIE here and get away with it for very long.

You can never acknowledge this because you are quite obviously INSANE.

Why dont you ask your psycho doctors down at the VA to explain it to you?

I understand that cognitive behavioral therapy can be beneficial to compulsive liars.

Oh but thats right - you are most likely a psychopath.

Thats right. You need to take responsibility for all the nonsense you make up.

You cant post it and then claim that it must be true because you post your real name.

This only shows us that george kamburoff is a liar and a phony who is wiling to make up facts.

Funny - george trashes his name here and still thinks that it is a valid reference.

This is a psychopath poster boy.

"A woman with a staggering record of fraud, deceit, lies, and broken promises concluded a letter to the parole board with, "I've let a lot of people down… One is only as good as her reputation and name. My word is as good as gold.""

Ahaahaaaahaaaaaaa

Only thing you can do with a psychopath is kick him down the road.

Which explains georges 20+ jobs.

Or you can throw him in jail if youre lucky.

Ever use your phony MS to commit fraud poster boy?

@Otto
You do not seem to make any distinction between a comment to express your ideas and cyberbullying. I do think that when somebody is expressing his ideas he is allowed to be blunt; there are things that are impossible to be expressed in a nice way no matter how hard one's try to be nice. Cyberbullying is when someone is constantly harassing another and this is clearly the case here.
TechnoCreed

@Cyberbullyer
I have sent a complaint to Physorg and I hope that other people who feel concerned about cyberbullying will do the same. It is simple just copy and send the complaint that I wrote.

An official complaint on a case of cyberbullying.

For many months now, people who post comments on the pages of Physorg, have been witnessing an incessant harassment from user: TheGhostofOtto1923 on user: gkam. I can understand that your moderators exercise some restraints and prefer to receive official complaints before taking action; since I enjoy and defend freedom of expression I can understand that. But cyberbullying is a serious societal problem and you should keep a watchful eye on that. Please take action against cyberbullying. http://phys.org/help/feedback/

Well said, TechnoCreed.. Although gkam is not innocent in this either, GhostofOtto has gone too far and has crossed the line into bullying.

I'd hate to see Otto banned (since he does often make good technical comments), but when someone else's comments annoys him he gets vindictive and attacks the commenter rather than just the comments. Therefore I have seconded your complaint.

TechnoCreed, thank you for helping make this a better site!

Comets are mostly ice accompanied with dust, small rocks, etc. So it is conceivable that a comet could have caused the Younger/Dryus cooling. If a comet could bring into the atmosphere considerably more water than rocky material, it would seem possible that following the fires would come a prolonged worldwide wet period, perhaps converting normal desert regions into wet zones. Also cloud layers would increase and along with the dust would be cooling effects of the extra cloud cover. In reading about comet impacts, the effect of the water content of comets seems to be ignored. If effects of water content of comets has been analyzed, could someone send me the title.
