Researchers design a catalyst that neutralizes gases responsible for climate change

This new technology, developed by the Research Group in Carbon Materials and Environmental allows, through a catalytic system active, efficient and stable over time, to eliminate nitrous oxide decomposing it into nontoxic products, purifying the gases emitted by industries related to the production of fertilizers, plastics and coal burning plants to produce electricity or vehicles.

Nitrous oxide is a gaseous compound harmful to the environment which is related to the destruction of the ozone layer and the global warming. "Deleting all nitrous oxide emitted to the atmosphere due to human activities would be equivalent to reducing all emissions of agreed in the " Agustín Bueno López, researcher in the and explains.

The most promising method among those proposed for the removal of nitrous oxide consists of decomposing it into oxygen and which are the main components of air and therefore, they have no adverse effects on health or the environment. The main drawback is that temperatures above 625°C are required so that this breakdown can take place spontaneously, and this temperature is much higher than that contained in polluted gas streams.

"However, nitrous oxide can be decomposed at lower temperatures using a suitable catalyst, but it usually comes along with other gases that inhibit the catalysts that were available heretofore, preventing its implementation on a full scale" Agustín Bueno explains.

Aiming to overcome the limitations, the present invention provides a novel capable of working in the presence of inhibitors such as oxygen, other oxides of nitrogen and at temperatures below 450°C, so it can be used in most of the sources emitting this pollutant gas.

"The catalytic decomposition is carried out by placing the catalyst in a fixed bed reactor through which the gas stream to be purified passes. The composition and temperature of the gas stream varies from source to source, and this is taken into account when implementing the catalyst", Agustín Bueno states.

The technology has been successfully tested in a real plant production of nitric acid and in the exhaust pipe of a state-of-the-art diesel engine, and the tests performed in the laboratory show that it can be applied to various chemical production plants, processes involving oxidation with ammonia, combustion processes of fossil fuels (coal, biomass, waste, etc.). and vehicle emissions (gasoline engines, diesel engines, etc..) among others.

The research work has been carried out over the past eight years at the University of Alicante using public funds entirely, and the results have attracted the interest from several companies involved in the chemical and the automotive industries.

We must end this costly debate as we drift closer to unstoppable warming.
The scientific consensus isn't that it is a crisis, it's only that climate change is "real and is happening" and only COULD be and science has NEVER said it WILL be an actual crisis so why doesn't science end this costly debate and say a crisis threatening the planet is unavoidable before we reach the point of no return from complete unstoppable warming. What has to happen for science to say their crisis is as real and as inevitable as they love to say comet hits are? It's a 28 year old "maybe" crisis and real planet lovers welcome the good news of exaggeration of crisis for our children.
But support for CO2 mitigation has vanished so why doesn't science save the planet by ending the debate with a clear warning of a coming climate crisis? "maybe" is unsustainable!
*Occupywallstreet now does not even mention CO2 in its list of demands because of the bank-funded and corporate run carbon trading stock markets ruled by politicians.
*Canada killed Y2Kyoto with a freely elected climate change denying prime minister and nobody cared, especially the millions of scientists warning us of unstoppable warming (a comet hit).
*Julian Assange is of course a climate change denier.
*Obama had not mentioned the crisis in two State of the Unions addresses.

The climate has changed and will always change, regardless of the people on the earth. Ice ages are a prime example, the majority occurring long before humans appeared and the last occurring before humans had even started the basics of today, namely agriculture. Even the seasons of the earth are a prime example of how a small reduction in sunlight can alter a local environment drastically. A tiny increase in energy from the sun could easily affect the earth, scientists even agree that the sun will increase it's output at various times through out it's life time and will increase in a linear fashion until it finally dies.

Why do people think the sun is a stable object in the sky, which only produces light?

Increase global temperatures are beneficial in a sense. A bigger problem is the massive deforestation in some countries, since trees help preserve the fertile soil on the top. The oxygen they produce is nice, but once the fertile soil is gone, it takes a lot of effort to restore it.

BO was going to stop the oceans rising. It seemed to have gone by the wayside once elected. Like Bill Clinton who was going to save education, he did nothing but talk about it. Dreams are good things, but action is better and neither of these guys lifted a finger. Perhaps, letting someone other than the government attack these issues is the better choice.
