NASA study verifies global warming trends

A new study by researchers from NASA has verified the accuracy of recent global warming figures.

The team used measurements of the 'skin' temperature of the Earth taken by a satellite-based infrared measurement system called AIRS (Atmospheric Infra-Red Sounder) from 2003 to 2017.

They compared these with station-based analyses of air temperature anomalies—principally the Goddard Institute for Space Studies Surface Temperature Analysis (GISTEMP).

They found a high level of consistency between the two datasets over the past 15 years. Their results are published today in Environmental Research Letters.

Commenting on the study, lead author Dr. Joel Susskind, from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said: "AIRS data complement GISTEMP because they are at a higher spatial resolution than GISTEMP, and have more complete global coverage.

"Both demonstrate the earth's surface has been warming globally over this period, and that 2016, 2017, and 2015 have been the warmest years in the instrumental record, in that order.

"This is important because of the intense interest in the detail of how estimates of global and regional temperature change are constructed from surface temperature data, and how known imperfections in the raw data (due to station moves, gaps, instrument and practice changes, urban heat island effects) are handled."

AIRS data reflects skin temperature at the surface of the ocean, land, and snow/ice covered regions. Surface-based data are a blend of two metre surface air data anomalies over land, and bulk sea surface temperature anomalies in the ocean.

To compare the two, the researchers constructed monthly grid point climatologies for each calendar month and for each set of data, by averaging the monthly values over 2003 to 2017, with anomalies for a given month, in a given year, defined as the difference of the grid point value for that month from its monthly climatology.

Co-author Dr. Gavin Schmidt, from NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said: "Interestingly, our findings revealed that the surface-based data sets may be underestimating the temperature changes in the Arctic. This means the warming taking place at the poles may be happening more quickly than previously thought.

"Our work also shows that complementary satellite-based surface analyses serve as an important validation of surface-based estimates. They may point the way to make improvements in surface-based products that can perhaps be extended back many decades."

Now that the satellite data confirms the surface data, what are the denialist kooks going to do now?

Blame the Martians?

@V4

I was reading the news in another website and saw someone with the user name "Vendicar Decarian". Is that one of your sox? Or are YOU VendicarDecarian's sock? The other one did resemble YOUR speech patterns.
Just sayin'

Call me a "kook" for having more faith in the ACTUAL temp record vs an interpretation of an opinion of an adjusted "record".

Could they at least acknowledge that the last year was 0.5 degrees C lower than 2015. If there wasn't an agenda 2018 would not have been hidden in this article and the down trend of the last 3 years would not, have not been unincluded from the article. I call bias.

First of all, at best this would be a "resumed warming trend", since it the trend went on hiatus for a the last few decades following the initial trot out of the AGW hoax. Why is that?

Next, before the gleeful doomers start ringing alarmist bells, most students of the issue are satisfied that the Earth has in fact been generally warming over the last ~300 years. From a relatively cool era, too. Why is that?

There was a similar warming trend in early 20th century, well before the political power grab & their "taught to the test" minion's attack on carbon and its dioxide was imagineered, and well before current significant rates of human-sourced CO2 release. Why is that ?

Now, warmer Earth temperature and higher CO2 concentrations will be a net benefit to Mankind's comfort and sustenance. Why is that ?

is is kind of funny to call 2018 " the 4th warmest" which would mean it COOLING compared to the WEATHER of the last few years ...

Celebrate CO2 !

Its the decade on decade trend on the graphs which makes the warming obvious:-

Uhm @V4Vendicar, just a correction here: This satellite dataset confirmed a different satellite dataset, not ground-based measurements.

Since you claim that the actual temperature record is better than the raw data - that we know need adjustments for moving stations, different altitude of observations (surface vs atmospheric) - and since you use kook font - well, yes, that *is* one appropriate way to react to your fact denial.

You "kook" the books by your own claim and kook references.

Since you dark web denierbots insist that only your data is acceptable to you grifters & gonifs?

Post the exact correct temperatures for my vicinity.

So why an increase in Greenland glacier size?
I guess that means it's getting warmer too... total BS from these USELESS frauds.

Notable that none of the pseudonymous experts we get in the comments below the line can manage anything worthy of publishing above the line. Keep it up guys - the extraordinary hubris in imagining you know better than decades of top level expert studies by our top science agencies and the conspiracy theories that are your reasons for why they must be deliberately wrong have stopped resonating with the ignorant; with ever better informed and less apathetic public it just hammers home the difference between stuff people believe because they want to and real science.

Have to wonder what all the idiot climate deniers will be saying in another 5 years, - I have to believe there will some career deniers gettin' a good beatdown if the evidence shows they were being subsidized by the oil interests and the right wing that just couldn't give up all that money they have been stuffing in their pockets, - knowing full well the consequences down the road....

What exactly is the plan when it get's really uncomfortable - gonna run the air-con 24/7 ?

Still trolling me, are you? But I thought that you would be enjoying the heat in your favourite Socialist country, Venezuela, by now, sucking up to one of your favourite Communist dictators, Maduro. Since YOU are definitely a true Socialist and a Trump--hater, then you need to pack your rags and take the next boat out to Caracas, rrwilliejoe.
And you have a very bad habit of foolishly interjecting your foolishness in someone's discussion with someone else. So WHEN are you going to grow up and learn some good manners, if at all possible, rrwilliejoe? I queried V4 and expected him to answer, and instead YOU piped up to toot your own horn rather than doing the right thing and minding your own business, rrwilliejowl. I'll bet that you do that also with your fellow mental patients.

I have read that there are more polar bears now since they are no longer hunted and killed; their numbers have risen and they have now entered towns looking for food. Dogs and cats beware!
When they were deemed to be an endangered species due to global warming and said to be drowning due to melting ice flows, it turns out that polar bears are excellent swimmers and at least one has been seen swimming a 30 mile stretch without even getting winded. It was claimed that the bears could catch a fish or 2 while IN THE WATER, eat their meal, and then continue swimming at their leisure. Fantastic and beautiful animals, they are.
It was said years ago, that Eskimo old people near the end of their lives would go out of the village and sit on the ice/snow and wait for a polar bear to come eat them.

I live in the East within the tropic of Cancer and the Equator. I took an interest in the environment several years ago and and logged various changes throughout the yearly three seasons (no Springtime). Originally, Winter temperature in my area would often go down to about 10C at night with sunny days of around 27-30C. In the past five years this hasn't happened and the coolest temperature have been around 16-18C. However, my logging cannot be classed as scientific data collection, it wasn't so appreciate that it can be criticized. What might be an important factor is the change in local animal life and local land development. Much of the local area has been cleared for road expansions and housing and I suspect that has had an impact. Certainly the animal life has changed dramatically with pythons and poisonous snakes being more common in out of town homes. Cont.

Cont. During the winter time Murders of Crows are much more common than before, having migrated down from the northern mountain areas. And of course, they have a good regular food source in the increase of human refuse.
If this type of activity is multiplied on a larger scale one has a possible argument for the anthropogenic influence.

says Mimath

Humans do have an extraordinary effect on Nature and the Natural Order of things that includes environment, animals and plants. Humans were supposed to become the Stewards of the Earth and to mitigate any and all unnatural progressions that would change the Earth to its detriment.
But this is what humans DO, you see.
They do it willfully, unthinkingly, and often with animosity and self-satisfaction.
Global warming has occurred on this planet many times before, just as ice ages have. Changes are not always induced by the human element, since after all, how long has Mankind been here compared to the age of the Earth?

Apr 18, 2019
-contd-
If ALL humans were of one MIND, and were agreeable to cooperating with how the Earth should be run and taken care of as though the future of the Earth itself hung in the balance; with this knowledge would humans feel the absolute NEED to do their utmost best to keep the Earth as pristine clean and natural as possible?

Of course not.

That is not the human way. The idea of Freedom astoundingly means (to many) to DO what they feel like doing. Throw a gum wrapper on the street, a banana peel on a bicycle path; and many other acts of vandalism against their home planet. They don't SEE it as a "home planet". They only see the street and the bike path as a place to toss their garbage.
And then there are the AGWites who tell them; DO as I say, NOT as I do. Al Gore is one of those who are littering the Earth, while pretending that they're not doing so. Hypocrisy is on ALL sides.

Apr 18, 2019
It's not whether the Earth is warmer, or cooler -- Earth has been considerably warmer in the past, and considerably cooler. The issue is twofold: what causes climate change, and how fast climate change occurs.

The Earth is getting warmer; the trend is clear. What's causing the warming is human created greenhouse gas emissions in the form of carbon dioxide, which is leading to natural methane release from permafrost (this is immensely simplified). Another thing that is also clear is that the warming is taking place too quickly for natural adaptations to occur. Even if we didn't care about the environment, what we are doing to it will end up hurting us.

Humans need to cut back -- way back -- on carbon dioxide emissions. I don't see a downside to that.
