All systems are go as a Chinese spacecraft and rover power up their observation equipment after making a first-ever landing on the far side of the moon, the Chinese National Space Administration said.

The Jade Rabbit 2 rover has succeeded in establishing a digital transmission link with a relay satellite that sends data back to the Beijing control center, the space agency said in a posting late Friday on its website.

The rover's radar and panoramic camera have been activated and are working normally, it said. A photo released by the agency showed the rover stopped at a point not far from where the Chang'e 4 spacecraft touched down Thursday.

Chang'e 4, named after a Chinese moon goddess, is the first craft to make a soft landing on the moon's far side, which faces away from Earth. Previous landings, including one by China's Chang'e 3 in 2013, have been on the near side.

After sending the rover off from a ramp, the spacecraft deployed three 5-meter (16-foot) low-frequency radio antennas, the Chinese said. Chang'e 4 also has sent back images taken with a topographical camera.

Researchers hope that low-frequency observations of the cosmos from the far side, where from Earth are blocked by the moon, will help scientists learn more about the early days of the solar system and even the birth of the universe's first stars.

Harvard University astronomer Avi Loeb noted, however, that the relay satellite needed to send back information from the far side also contaminates the sky.

A Chinese spacecraft on Thursday, Jan. 3, made the first-ever landing on the far side of the moon, state media said. The lunar explorer Chang'e 4 touched down at 10:26 a.m., China Central Television said in a brief announcement at the top of its noon news broadcast. (China National Space Administration/Xinhua News Agency via AP)
"As long as we keep it clean of radio interference, the is very good for radio astronomy," he said.

The far side has been observed many times from lunar orbits, but never explored on the surface. It is popularly called the "dark side" because it can't be seen from Earth and is relatively unknown, not because it lacks sunlight.

"It's just the far side, it can be either dark or light," Loeb said, depending on the time of day.

The pioneering landing highlights China's ambitions to rival the U.S., Russia and Europe in space. Both China's space community and public have taken pride in the accomplishment, with some drawing comparisons to the United States.

China's space program lags America's, but has made great strides in the past 15 years, including manned flights and a space laboratory that is seen as a precursor to plans for a station.

Oh granny, you are so gullible.
If British "foreign aid" is set up as the USA?
Except for the bribes paid into the Swiss/Offshore bank accounts of the recipient countries leaders?

All the rest of the funding is required to be spent on American products, delivered on American flagged ships & planes.

Such as obsolete weapons & equipment to the LEO & secret police of the receiving countries.

Surplus foods {past sell by date} of course but also defective medicines. Mass manufacturing produces a lot of waste & damaged products.

The American taxpayers are subsidizing the production of faulty goods & useless drugs. Shipping those defective products to "win the hearts & minds" of the ignorant foreign savages. American Jobs for American Workers!

Any wonder that America is so beloved around the World?

& granny, you might make inquiries as to specifically which China is receiving your largesse?

Good old fashion pious christian charity. I'm sure! {roll-my-eyes}

It's what the foreign aid office is good at
the fact only a few millions £££ are in question is not the point
the fact is these poverty stricken nuclear super power countries like china, packistan, india
are receiving aid from the down trodden English tax payer
to launch their rockets in to outer space
with the result we are not
at this precise moment
climbing out our darkside rocket
showing these Chinese coolies how to grow their rice on the darkside
and to make matters worse
the English government
is suffering

Even though
Pakistan is a nuclear super power
it is an overpopulated country
as its overpopulation
has made its towns
poverty stricken

no proper sanitation
made worse
by
Pakistan's extreme temperatures
and
there health problems
they can not pay
the exorbitant

having devolved their medicines
have to get a return on their investment
which is why
in Pakistan these drugs are made cheaply

A few days ago, the news media had been saying that if the African nation, Kenya defaults on its loan from China, then there is a good chance that China will take over Kenya's big seaport in Mombasa. Kenya borrowed from China to build its SGR railway, which is a money-losing proposition. But the above link now negates this possible takeover - so the question is whether or not Kenya will be able to repay China for its loans. And where will they get the money.
Not that this has anything to do with Chinese rovers on the Moon. But nevertheless, it is (as of now) questionable that Kenya will be able to repay. Will China forgive the debt?

Moonchine, the first lunar capital.

China having its moon rovers, powering them up for their Chinese experiments, this is no longer a moon race as we have been there already.
China has seen opportunities on the darkside, it is following up this expeditionary force with reinforcements as they are setting up living accommodation on the their Moonchine.
This is like a scouting expeditionary force, to find the bests spot to build the first lunar capital, Moonchine.
This is going to interesting, as we can only sit back and watch as these moonchinians populate the first Luna city, Moonchine in 4.5billion years.
China, with its population of a billion, has potentially four times the gross domestic product of America, meaning in a few years America is heading down a road that in no way can it compete with China.
China is the oldest most advanced civilisation on earth and with its population is heading to be the wealthiest country on earth.

Jade Rabbit. Good name if China indeed plans to join the rest of humanity in understanding the cosmos--in this case via low-frequency radio observation. But if it's more about "conquering the universe" maybe that innocent looking rabbit is more like the one from The Holy Grail.

Gee, I'm sorry fellows. I'm sorry to hear that you have submitted to paying the "danesgeld".

Forced upon you by the chinese armies occupying your country.
As their fleets cruise up & sown your coastline.
& the mighty chinese aero-space force thunders across your skies.

Yep, just too damn bad!

Oh well, if you had only been as clever as us yanks.
Who would never give a starving child a nickel crust of bread, unless we got a dime back.

Oh wait. It's your armies in other people's countries. Your fleets sailing up & down their coasts. Your aero-space forces claiming "Rights of Transit" across their skies.

Hypocrisy, much?

Find the courage in yourselves to realize all that fear & hate you show the "stranger"? Is more properly deserved by your country's business leaders & their puppet politicians.
Who are manipulating your bigotry ro distract from their corruption.

Yep. George Orwell, the Prophet for the Modern Age.

Communist China has been flexing her muscles of late. This is to be expected, since she won't be contented to crush the competition in the market of goods and finance; she also wants to be the one to place her missile weaponry on the far side of the Moon to be indirectly aimed at those nations who give her lip instead of the proper respect that she, as a superpower, desires.
There are those within and without America who absolutely and positutely HATE the USA - either out of jealousy and a fervent wish to watch America's demise, or having such an industrial-strength admiration and love for all things Communist. Or both.
Communist China is now, in her newly--found accomplishment in Space, retaliating against her "round-eyed" tormentors who, for centuries, were responsible for giving the Chinese leaders - first the Emperor, and then the Communist Part in Beijing - the perceived "back of their hand" while pretending that they were equals.
Saving face is everything to the Chinese

What with the xenophobes, bizarro conspiracists, YECs, and at least one fruitcake misogynist- none of which who cannot resist coming in to to post their crap, it's sadly become the norm. Anymore, I can pretty well guess who's going to be posting and what they'll be saying just based on the article titles. As with most trolls, the ones that crap here are very predictable.

And in other news today, the Pentagon has announced that the US military is not ready for a war with Russia or Communist China - or both simultaneously - this part not being mentioned. The fact that the US military is so unready must mean that the future enemy can just walk in and take over without much resistance, except for those Second Amendment Rights folks who love their God, their guns, and their country.
This obviously means that, IF either Russia OR China OR both start a war with the USA - it is a strong possibility that those Americans who hate America (for whatever reasons) will more likely cheer hurrah, while doing all they can to welcome the Chinese or Russian armies (or both) into the sovereign free nation of the US of A.
An old Chinese saying: "Today America - Tomorrow the World".

The UK had best watch out - sending all those millions pound sterling to China - where China might round up all of their Chinese Muslim Uyghurs in Xinjiang and ship them off to the United Kingdom for their troubles.
