Global climate trend since Nov. 16, 1978 shows +0.14 C increase per decade

December 4, 2014, University of Alabama in Huntsville
1978-2014 Trend Map

Dr. John Christy, a professor of atmospheric science and director of the Earth System Science Center at The University of Alabama in Huntsville, and Dr. Roy Spencer, an ESSC principal scientist, use data gathered by advanced microwave sounding units on NOAA and NASA satellites to get accurate temperature readings for almost all regions of the Earth. This includes remote desert, ocean and rain forest areas where reliable climate data are not otherwise available.

The satellite-based instruments measure the of the atmosphere from the surface up to an altitude of about eight kilometers above sea level. Once the monthly temperature data is collected and processed, it is placed in a "public" computer file for immediate access by atmospheric scientists in the U.S. and abroad.

Global climate trend since Nov. 16, 1978: +0.14 C per decade

November temperatures (preliminary)

  • Global composite temp.: +0.33 C (about 0.60 degrees Fahrenheit) above 30-year average for November.
  • Northern Hemisphere: +0.36 C (about 0.65 degrees Fahrenheit) above 30-year average for November.
  • Southern Hemisphere: +0.30 C (about 0.54 degrees Fahrenheit) above 30-year average for November.
  • Tropics: +0.25 C (about 0.45 degrees Fahrenheit) above 30-year average for November.

October temperatures (revised):

  • Global Composite: +0.37 C above 30-year average
  • Northern Hemisphere: +0.33 C above 30-year average
  • Southern Hemisphere: +0.40 C above 30-year average
  • Tropics: +0.19 C above 30-year average

(All temperature anomalies are based on a 30-year average (1981-2010) for the month reported.)

Notes on data released Dec. 2, 2014:

November 2014 was the second warmest November in the 36-year global satellite temperature record, according to Dr. John Christy, a professor of atmospheric science and director of the Earth System Science Center at The University of Alabama in Huntsville. With a global average temperature that was 0.33 C (about 0.60 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than seasonal norms, November 2014 trailed only November 2009, which averaged 0.39 C (about 0.70 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than seasonal norms.

The tropics slowly warmed through November in response to modest warming in the El Niño regions of the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.

Warmest Novembers (1979-2014)
(Warmer than seasonal norms)

  1. 2009 +0.39 C
  2. 2014 +0.33 C
  3. 2005 +0.32 C
  4. 2012 +0.31 C
  5. 2002 +0.25 C
  6. 2010 +0.24 C
  7. 2003 +0.21 C
  8. 1990 +0.20 C
  9. 2006 +0.20 C
  10. 2008 +0.19 C
  11. 2013 +0.19 C

Compared to seasonal norms, the coldest place in Earth's atmosphere in November was in northwestern Wisconsin, just outside the town of Cable, where temperatures were as much as 3.29 C (about 5.92 degrees Fahrenheit) colder than seasonal norms. Compared to seasonal norms, the warmest departure from average in November was in the Beaufort Sea off the northern coast of Alaska. Temperatures there were as much as 5.20 C (about 9.36 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than seasonal norms.

This report represents the completion of 36 years (December 1978 through November 2014) of global temperature data collected by microwave sounding units on NOAA and NASA satellites. During that time the global atmosphere has warmed an average of 0.14 C per decade, or just over one-half degree C (0.91 degrees Fahrenheit) in 36 years.

That warming has not, however, been uniform around the globe. The fastest warming has been over the Arctic Ocean and the Arctic portions of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Those areas have warmed at the rate of 0.49 C per decade, or more than 1.76 C (about 3.17 degrees Fahrenheit) in 36 years. The fastest warming spot is in Baffin Bay, where temperatures have risen 0.82 C per decade since 1978.

By comparison, the oceans surrounding the Antarctic are cooling at the rate of 0.02 C per decade, or 0.07 C since December 1978. The fastest cooling area is in East Antarctica near Dome C, where temperatures have been dropping at the rate of 0.50 C per decade.

Driven in part by those contrasting regions, the Northern Hemisphere is warming more than twice as fast as the Southern Hemisphere (0.19 C per decade vs. 0.09 C per decade).

The contiguous 48 U.S. states have an average warming rate of 0.22 C (almost 0.40 degrees Fahrenheit) per decade during the past 36 years. That means the average atmospheric temperature over the lower 48 has warmed by 0.79 C or about 1.43 Fahrenheit during that time.

Satellite data also shows that global temperatures have dropped 1.08F from 1998 to late 2014. Does anyone find that odd?
Data is malleable.
Example: The average of a 4,5,6 and 0 per decade temperature rise would show an average increase of 5 per decade.
However, that last decade with the odd data (0) is the one that needs attention and the one that is the most interesting.

I am glad Phys Org printed this, they should know then that Dr. Christy believes that the climate system is quite insensitive to humanity's greenhouse gas emissions and doubts that human activity is to blame for most of the observed recent warming.

This study just shows that there has been no global warming in 5yrs. look at the numbers and years . No.1 was in 2009 with + .39C and 2014 and No.2 with +.33C. This shows no global warming and in fact global cooling of -.06C or on decadal trend of -.12 C. which amounts to -1.2C a century Just shows you can finagle the numbers to show what you want. There are many other articles that can be obtained over the internet and news networks that have other data that shows there has been global cooling the past 18yrs.

Please do feel free to note that this is data for atmospheric air temperatures. It does not include *all* sources of heat increase, like the massive bodies of water the planet contains that can hold onto heat, as well as heat of fusion taken up by melting ice.

Indeed you all must be correct because CO2 doesn't trap heat, and we haven't noticed a 50% increase in concentrations since the beginning of industrial activity....

Oh...wait...

So you might be able to understand it.

And here, there are pictures for you all...

Now that we know the Earth is round again, maybe we can discuss your real issue with climate change...

Spencer and Christy love to use the RSS data sets simply because the satellites do not look at the oceans at depth (700m - 2000m) and they perform poorly at the poles (ice acts as an insulator). The RSS satellite data is cherry picked data when that is all that you go by. These are the two regions that have shown the greatest amount of warming over the past two decades. Spencer and Christy want to remove the poles and our oceans as being a part of our planet. It is almost as if they envision our atmosphere as being in an orbit around our planet instead of being a part of our planet.

Spencer's and Christy's work has never stood up under peer review. Never. What they say about the surface temperatures is within range, but to only use surface temperatures to determine the warming/cooling trend of our planet is like measuring a 3 dimensional object and only showing one dimension.

Without the smart guys (who are not in this field of work) to tell us how things really work, as opposed to those lying scientists, we would be in trouble.

Ett, you don't have a clue. Spencer and Christy maintain their own dataset called the UAH temperature dataset and it actually shows slightly more warming than RSS. Your ignorance is astounding. They are measuring the temperature of the troposphere and the data collected at the poles from satellites is light years better than statistically filling in the data for the poles where there is no actual data, which is what the ground-based temperatures do. What does ice's insolating properties have to do with the temperature of the atmosphere above it? Then maybe you should elaborate why a temperature dataset of the lower ATMOSPHERE should include data for ocean temperatures, moron. Which of their papers, that have been published in peer reviewed journals, have not "stood up?" You cultists are a joke. The one's like gkam get on here to say hooray for their religion and doesn't even understand that Spencer and Christy are CAGW skeptics.

Err, the quoted temperatures are for the month of November. In fact for a yearly temperature this year will be or nearly be the hottest on record. There is an uncertainty though in these measurements of 0.1C, so we can't say definitively that it is.

The fact (if it is true) that November was the second warmest month in 36 years does not imply that global warming is continuing. Average temperature did go up before leveling off. With a higher mean, once in a while you will get a very warm month.

No one is arguing that there has been no temperature increase. The argument is as to whether it has continued. It has not.

You said it, being narrow & relying on ONE data set makes U look dis-ingenuous. Data sets of sites like woodfortrees etc accepted by bulk of deniers are averages & don't account for local swings.

This seems to refute your claim & also for peter_piasecki_92, can u not see correlation with CO2 from site accepted by deniers ?

Have u NOT thought global temp data suffers ocean moderation & is averaged ?

Therefore even apparent 0.2deg C is HIGH as oceans cover ~70% of earth & oceans have 4000x specific heat of atmosphere.

You appear to NOT understand differential specific heat & WHY this is immensely important ?

ie an averaged 0.2deg C rise in ocean equates to enough energy to raise atmosphere by 800 degrees, do you get that ?

Obviously we are LUCKY we have oceans & even luckier we have melting ice. Can u do the math on, say we reduce the 4000x down to 100x, that still raises atmosphere by 20 deg C

Can U see now why "only" 0.2C is VERY Significant re Heat ?
