Climate: Monthly heat records have increased fivefold

Jan 14, 2013

Global warming has caused monthly records for heat to increase fivefold in frequency, according to a study by scientists in Germany and Spain, published on Monday.

In parts of Europe, Africa and , the frequency of months with record-breaking heat has surged tenfold, it said.

The evidence comes from an analysis of 131 years of monthly , monitored at 12,000 points around the world, which are stored in a database.

If man-made warming is stripped out of the equation, 80 percent of the records for hottest-ever months would not have occurred, it said.

"The last decade brought unprecedented , for instance in the US in 2012, in Russia in 2010, in Australia in 2009 and in Europe in 2003," said Dim Coumou of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research near Berlin.

On current trends for global warming, the number of new monthly heat records will be 12 times higher in 30 years than today, the researchers said.

"This doesn't mean there will be 12 times more hot summers in Europe than today—it actually is worse," Coumou said in a press release issued by PIK.

"To count as new records, they actually have to beat heat records set in the 2020s and 2030s, which will already be hotter than anything we have experienced to date."

The study, which was co-authored by scientists at the Complutense University of Madrid, appears in the journal .

And there's been no global warming in at least 15 years (as originally measured).

And no global warming in at least 12 years (using the new, manipulated dataset).

@gregor - well first - there is a real conflict with this kind of article http://cleantechn...r-scale/ and your postition - but on a more general point - so what? Your article states that the average temps in Australia are going up - so that really does not make a point. Do you see how you have to dig and find counter evidence every time there is an article mentioning climate change? In other words - you are digging for evidence to support a pre-established view - which is the poster definition of confirmation bias. It seems to me in this situation - you have really not said very much - the temperatures are increasing.

UbVonTard is back to telling his same old lies using his same old dishonest cherry picking of dates.

In order to support his claim, he has to specify the start and end date of his time interval to 1/10th of a year, and use an abandoned temperature index that excludes large swaths of the polar regions which are known to be rapidly warming.

Indeed people that think "it's" isn't a valid word are known to have debatable discussion techniques, therefore their arguments must be highly invalid.

The consequences of global warming are unfortunately all to real in my country and even as being one of worlds wealthiest ones we might not be able to afford to protect ourselves from rising sea levels in the near future. It's hard for me to understand people here are actually still debating the validity of this human-caused phenomenon.

For those that have never attended geology in high school: Global warming causes near-sea climates to have warmer winters and cooler summers and land climates to have hotter summers and colder winters. So having extreme colds during winter in Pheonix actually confirms global warming rather than debunking it.

Of course it did. Regionally, it was "the hottest year on record," so obviously it wouldn't likely be cold enough to break all time cold records (duh). But record cold elsewhere killed hundreds:

http://en.wikiped...old_wave

Australia is in the grips of an unprecedented heat wave - breaking many all time high records - and having to change their color charts because they have never experienced this level of heat before.
While the U.S. is now suffering many all time record cold temperatures.

If their science is so valid, why do they need childish insult spewing programs to proselytize their faith?
Probably because ridicule is a rational response in the face of the intractable, intransigent, wilful ignorance which you, ubybooby, and the rest of the denialist faithful evidence with each post in this forum.

That, and the still evident fact that you are incapable of distinguishing between weather and climate.
Um ...as you apparently confused a single warm season in North America with "bitch-slapping" 2012 global heat records, it appears you're the one experiencing this difficulty.

But, as I stated from the beginning of this thread, it seems all you have to argue with are false claims and ad hominems.

Don't you have anything better to do?

Science tells us that as the globe warms, there will be greater extremes in the fluctuation around the mean, producing more pronounced cold and warm weather, but principally warm weather.
Right ...the science of make believe, maybe. LOL.

But again, you've lost the context anyway. So let's get back to it... How is measuring cold temperatures with a thermometer prove cold temperatures are caused by AGW?

Global warming has caused monthly records for heat to increase fivefold in frequency, according to a study by scientists in Germany and Spain, published on Monday.
It's funny then that the median year for all-time record heat temperatures is 1917, but the median year for all time record cold temperatures is 1947.

Isn't it supposed to be getting warmer?

Global average temperature anomaly for 2012 = 0.56

Poor UbVonTard. In a subject about global climate, he has once again switched back to yammering nonsense about American weather.

His brain wasting disease makes it impossible for him to distinguish between the the concepts of global vs regional and climate vs weather.

He also has difficulty telling the difference between the genders, hence this song was created for him.

LOL! Even Vendispambot's favorite data trend is flattening. look at the recent huge drop in global temperatures! Here's the last 15 years of data - now down to only a .05 degree rise for this "adjusted" (manipulated by warmists) data.

Poor Vendispambot. Even its own manipulated warmist data betrays it. LOL!

ubybooby,

Even your adjusted trendline shows warming.

And yet you persist in claiming that there is no warming --that, in fact, this warming is some kind of cooling trend.

Either you've discovered some entirely new, never-before seen type of cooling, or you are a lying moron.

Nah --there's no "or" about it. Just a lying moron.

It is truly delightful to watch you grow ever more shrill as each hastily-rigged "support" gets knocked from under your house of denial.

I heard Hollywood called, and wants to cast you in their newest blockbuster, "The Incredible Shrinking Moron".
