US government research in 'crisis,' warns think tank

President Donald Trump came under fire for presenting a manipulated image of the trajectory of Hurricane Dorian

Interference in government research by US President Donald Trump's administration has reached a "crisis point" with almost weekly violations of previously respected safeguards, a report by a think tank said Thursday, warning that ignoring science has led to ineffective and costly policy.

From pressuring a top meteorologist to support Trump's false assertion about a hurricane's trajectory to relocating economists across the country after they said White House trade policy was harming farmers, the executive branch is undermining long-held principles of non-interference, the report by the Brennan Center said.

"Political officials have the prerogative to make , and even challenge the science and methodology of career experts, but accurate, nonpolitical, government-supported research and analysis should be protected," it said.

Led by former US attorney Preet Bharara and Christine Todd Whitman, head of the Environmental Protection Agency under George W Bush, the report urged more checks to uphold scientific integrity and to make it harder for presidents to sideline Congress by allowing "acting" officials to lead departments on a long-term basis.

The authors wrote the principles of apolitical and unbiased , which had "shifted the course of human history" through the space race, cures for disease, and innovations like the internet, had come under increasing threat by recent administrations.

Under Trump, though, the interference has reached new heights, the report said, warning that the trend risked creating a vicious cycle by paving the way for future administrations to push the envelope even further.

In 2018, Labor Department officials ordered career researchers to revise a study showing the of allowing restaurant managers to take tips from the tip pools of workers, eventually excluding the analysis because it did not support their political objective.

Man-made is a particularly sensitive topic, despite the overwhelming scientific consensus that it is real and must be addressed urgently.

EPA officials recently blocked agency scientists from presenting their research on the topic at a professional conference, and "an employee at the National Parks Service reports being instructed to avoid using terms such as 'climate change' in internal project proposals," the report said.

The POSPOTUS has no clothes, - never had a brain, is in no way brave, and NEVER HAS BEEN A PATRIOT - but claims to be one in propaganda attacking an enemy 24/7.....

They think they can trump science with politics. It won't work. The papers are not going to stop being published. What they do to try this won't work any better than Lysenkoism worked for the Soviets.

I remember an old Don Knotts movie were factorums were all worried that oversight was going to endanger their "cinchy jobs." Scientists run roughshod over Democrats and they go used to it under Obama.

"On September 6, NOAA published an unsigned statement in support of Trump's initial claim, saying that NHC models "demonstrated that tropical-storm-force winds from Hurricane Dorian could impact Alabama.""

-Apparently the people looking at trumps early forecast map are so gullible that they would assume that the hurricane would just stop if it got to florida just because the lying corrupt media told them so?

Heres an article that defamed the pres even while including early cycle maps that show the majority of predictions show it heading into the gulf

-What is critically endangering the pursuit of TRUTH in this country is a thoroughly corrupt media facing extinction who have been bought out by people like Soros to disseminate propaganda, and who will print ANYTHING to get you to click.

THIS is why we rightly do not trust ANYTHING that we hear from these people, including AGW.

Not only religion... politics poisons EVERYTHING.

Which is why systems of governance based upon it and influenced by it need to go.

"Democracy is based on the assumption that a million men are wiser than one man. How's that again? I missed something.
Autocracy is based on the assumption that one man is wiser than a million men. Let's play that over again, too. Who decides?" Heinlein/Lazarus Long
"An honest politician is a national calamity." Celines Third Law

-Technology is eliminating the need for competition. The path that produces the best result is becoming easier and easier to discern. AI will eventually be able to remove deception and corruption from all human institutions and so competition to discern the best path will not only be unnecessary but wasteful.

Which means democracy and capitalism both have finite lifetimes. But they have rarely been allowed to operate unfettered anyway so -?

How you gonna eliminate politics, @Blotto? That may very well be one of the stupidest comments I've ever heard on this site.

Try reading what you write for a change. Stupid is your common denominator, no?

Politics is the endeavor to get more than you deserve. Its tribalism. Nothing more. Your personal fav, communism, is only the attempt to eliminate politics. One party, one boss, one path, no competition. But sadly, like most human institutions, lots of corruption, which is only competition by other means.

AI and the internet of things will make corruption and crime impossible. The other driver - tribalism caused by overpopulation, will recede, leaving people with more confidence in a future where they will always have what they need. No need for politics any more.

Wants and needs can be presented to our machine overlords who will discern veracity and sincerity and settle things accordingly. This is what the courts and the voting booth are meant for but never provide.

And, what the ignorant Chicken Littles, who are incapable of an independent thought, won't ever get, is that this entire defamation of Trump is the LIE.
Yes, research is in CRISIS and it is from the AGW Cult.

I don't believe the need for politics can be totally removed. Even if the whole world was "controlled" by AI who would determine laws and policies and such, there would be a need to determine the parameters for the AI. For the determination, we need the voice of the whole world because the AI would control the whole world and there's the need for politics once again. AI would make politics less corrupt and more open but there would still be a need for decisions.

AI and the internet of things will make corruption and crime impossible.

That's like saying that moving your money to digital bank account makes it impossible to steal.

Yes it can.

No its not.

Sorry cotexx but since you have no respect for either facts or reasoned discourse, you'll just have to take my word for it.

You could try to elaborate me why and how with all your wisdom. Unless you can't and you are once again just escaping a conversation like in our talk about philosophy.

There can be quite a lot of truth in fiction and I'm guessing you did not see The Matrix. Where the premise was that AI created the perfect world and then to its astonishment, found that not only did humans reject it, but fought against it. Humans replaced religion with politics to dominate and control themselves and it has now devolved into that which is far worse. It is in our nature to never be satisfied, we'll always find a reason to resist and a cause to justify it, however irrational it must be. Doubt me? Look again at the insanity of the Climate Change lies. They have elevated a child, with a mental condition, who believes she can see an invisible gas, too sainthood.
