A team of Israeli engineers is the first to advance in an international competition sponsored by Google to send a privately-funded spacecraft to the moon, contest organizers announced Wednesday.

The Israeli nonprofit group SpaceIL has signed a contract with American aerospace manufacturer SpaceX to launch an unmanned spacecraft into lunar orbit—the first step a team must take toward landing on the moon and winning the $20 million grand prize. The launch is expected to take place in the second half of 2017.

Google's contest is meant to encourage private industry to create new technologies to reach the moon at lower costs than what governments have spent in past lunar expeditions.

"We wanted the everyday man and woman to know that they could be innovators. They could literally build a spacecraft at their university or in their garages," said Chanda Gonzales, senior director of the Google Lunar XPRIZE contest. "You don't have to be NASA."

The Israeli group is the first of 16 competing teams to finalize a contract with a launch provider and approve the technical and financial details with contest organizers, Gonzales said.

Contestants include groups and private companies from the United States, Malaysia, Italy, Japan, Germany, Hungary, Brazil, Canada, Chile and India.

Two U.S. companies—Astrobotic Technology Inc. and Moon Express— recently announced that they secured launch contracts, but have not yet submitted their agreements to contest organizers for approval, Gonzales said.

To win the contest, contestants must land a rover on the moon, and it must travel 500 meters (about 1,640 feet) and transmit high definition video and images back to Earth.

Instead of designing a robot that detaches from a lander and travels along the moon's surface, SpaceIL's spacecraft would land on the moon and then launch back in the air to land 500 meters away. SpaceIL unveiled its spacecraft design at a conference Wednesday at the Israeli president's residence.

Contestants have until the end of 2016 to secure an approved launch contract. The lunar mission must be completed by the end of 2017.

This is not what we need.

If this works out, meaning private enterprise is able to land on the Moon at a fraction of the cost incurred by NASA missions, that will be excellent news. IMHO, it will be a big step towards making space exploration something that independent companies can do efficiently and economically, not just a gravy train for taxpayer-funded, bloated money-wasting government agencies and their lackey companies. I wonder what would have happened if no private exploration voyages from the Old World to the New World ever happened - just government funded and controlled missions.

This is what we need.

But we need oversight as well... NASA makes sure that almost no biological material is on space craft we send to other planets -- private industry has no such motivation to keep the solar system biologically pristine.

Are you completely unaware of who funded Columbus?

We never did only what we "needed". We could be living in an utopia, but we could no longer exist too if we never listened to our desires. If it asks us to continue to show interest in the moon.....yeehaw?

Yes, perhaps you would think it cool to have a big Coke sign there, or perhaps the Chinese star?

Or an ad for Chevron?

No thanks. They will just trash it, like every other place we despoil.

Typical human-hater. Nobody in this world is up to your standards are they?

"[Psychopaths] perceive themselves as superior beings in a hostile world in which others are competitors for power and resources. They feel it is the optimum thing to do to manipulate and deceive others in order to obtain what they want."

-Yet more evidence to add to the pile.

Hopefully there aren't any muslims involved in this technology. We should ban muslims from having anything to do with space flight.

@returners/lurrkrr
considering christians also derive their religion from the same OT then we should also ban all you xtian nutters as well...

it's all the same religion, just different folk in charge pushing for different ideals which are only supported by their current beliefs and fanaticism, not by anything scientific or even logical (as demonstrated by you)

what a racist post, btw... it suits you

at least now you're not hiding the truth about yourself anymore, or trying to hide behind some facade of self-justified stupidity

I am not a racist.

Islam is derived from the teachings of the false prophet muhammad, and while claiming to acknowledge Jesus as a prophet, it denies all of his significant teachings.

It is the islamists who conquered surrounding regions and subjugated people to death or conversion.

the Early Christians did not do anything remotely like that.
Constantine, a false convert, created an organized church heirarchy which was polluted and used to justify the mad conquests of kings.

And to be clear, the Greeks and Romans were already that way before Christianity. They just used the false apostles (known as Popes and Cardinals) to promote their wars in the eyes of the common people who had been attempting to convert to the legitimate brand of christianity.

But it was never like that for about the first 3 centuries of Christianity, and if you actually bothered to read a freaking bible you would know that.

muhammad was a rapist and a false prophet who brought nothing but bloodshed everywhere he went.

Jesus said, "Pray on behalf of those who despitefully use you and curse you for my name's sake."

I certainly pray that muslims everywhere abandon the koran, muhammad, and the false god "allah" and seek the real god who is "not slack concerning his promise" to forgive and to 'cleanse from all unrighteousness".

So do voodoos, hindus, atheists, taoists, wiccans, etc, etc.

God loves the Arabic people, he just doesn't love their false religion and the evil acts they commit in it's name.

All religions are spawn of the same conceit and being so, are equally contrived.

The religion, even far more contrived, that is responsible for 100 million brutal murders through execution, deliberate starvation and being worked to death in labor camps in less than 100 years, is Marxism. They died sometimes for as little as their provocative act of wearing eyeglasses, but mostly for the heinous offense of thoughtcrime: not sharing the phantasmagorical utopian visions of a future where human nature is extinct and everyone who produces more will lovingly give the excess to those who produce nothing. And the more equal pigs, who will get the most, will decide who gets what's left over and will have the power to enforce it all.

I'm an atheist and I would rather live in a nation founded on Judeo-Christian principle than in 1984.

...at lower costs than what governments have spent in past lunar expeditions.
Is that because the lowest bidder paradigm became corrupted by money? Wait, weren't the bidders all already "private industry" anyway?

The last thing the body does before it runs out of blood is that it gives forth a mighty convulsion that is the most potent it can deliver. The last beats of the heart are it's most intense and contrived-Religion is the same.

It will bring forth a mighty convulsion in it's last gasps for life and air.

Realism, or scientism will not rule or own the world in it's stead but a more open spirituality will exist in the stead of organized religion.

As the science of over unity devices comes on line, as we crack the mystery of the thing we misanthropically call an atom, as we step into a non-oligarchical future, many things will change for humanity.

Both rationalism and religion, as a mirrored pair of control and manipulation strings -- will become disconnected from the human race.

Capitalism, and other extremes of oligarchical control such as Marxism, and other isms... all as components of the reflection of this paired insanity of bookends, they will also die a deserved death.

@lurrkrr
except, per your comments above (and elsewhere on PO, repeatedly) you are; you are also sexist and homophobic
Islam is derived from the teachings of the false prophet
only yall can have a prophet then? did you forget that there is absolutely NO empirical evidence supporting the existence of your jesus? or is that just coincidence?
It is the islamists who conquered surrounding regions and subjugated people to death or conversion
yeah, because the Holy Wars were all about spreading the good word through peaceful measures... gotcha!
so... that makes the Inquisition a minor inquiry into the definitions of right & wrong?
and your xtian forced subjugation of the American continents was a peaceful convention of love attempting to share brotherhood with native tribes????
what freaking world do you live in?

it isn't reality!

you ARE a racist, and stupid, to boot! you should try re-reading a little history without the beer goggles

@lurrkrr cont'd
I certainly pray that muslims everywhere abandon the koran, muhammad, and the false god "allah"
give the empirical evidence that their god is false and only your god is real... but remember, the god you call "false" is the SAME god you worship, you idiot, as the islam, jewish and xtian religions are ALL abrahamic. you are letting language interpretation dictate your delusional beliefs, which is why religion is so wrong
https://en.wikipe...eligions

he just doesn't love their false religion and the evil acts they commit in it's name
1- the religion is the same is yours, with different names
2- the only difference between xtianity and islam is the prophet name
3- perhaps you are the one who should read more of the bible? try looking up those above scriptures i gave, because you are also violating your own biblical laws... that makes you a heathen as well. so go stone yourself as a heretic and liar

Oct 08, 2015
Realism, or scientism will not rule or own the world
@KBK
the scientific method is not designed to rule the world, but to define it... and it's power is real rather than suggested or emotional
Both rationalism and religion,...will become disconnected from the human race
i can see religion being disconnected, but rational thought (not the -ism) is a necessity and required... and most any -ism is really more about labeling & contro

but IMHO, it appears religion most likely will be replaced with other social/cultural constructs designed to meet the needs religion now gives people but that are not as destructive to society, other cultures or people, as well as being less prejudiced and focused more on equality etc

the biggest shortcoming of religion and most codified belief systems is their introduction of prejudice as a measuring method and the segregation of those outside the belief system, as this is how violence begins: intentional separation/segregation

Oct 08, 2015
..realism, or scientism will not rule... rationalism and religion... will become disconnected... capitalism, ..Marxism, and other isms...will also die a deserved death...
This is what the anarchism is called...;-)

This is not what we need.

Sometimes it is about what we want.

But in this case it is also about what we need. We need to go into space, eventually. Or we'll just be sitting ducks for the next big one and follow the way of the dinosaurs so that the next intelligent species to arise can exhume our bones and say "Look at these morons. They stopped trying - then they died".
