A new study finds that changing climate in the polar regions can affect conditions in the rest of the world far quicker than previously thought.

A new study of the relationship between ocean currents and climate change has found that they are tightly linked, and that changes in the polar regions can affect the ocean and climate on the opposite side of the world within one to two hundred years, far quicker than previously thought.

The study, by an international team of scientists led by the University of Cambridge, examined how changes in ocean currents in the Atlantic Ocean were related to climate conditions in the during the last , by examining data from ice cores and fossilised plankton shells. It found that variations in ocean currents and abrupt climate events in the North Atlantic region were tightly linked in the past, and that changes in the polar regions affected the ocean circulation and climate on the opposite side of the world.

The researchers determined that as large amounts of fresh water were emptied into the North Atlantic as icebergs broke off the North American and Eurasian ice sheets, the deep and shallow currents in the North Atlantic rapidly slowed down, which led to the formation of sea ice around Greenland and the subsequent cooling of the Northern Hemisphere. It also strongly affected conditions in the South Atlantic within a matter of one to two hundred years. The results, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, show how climate events in the Northern Hemisphere were tightly coupled with changes in the strength of in the Atlantic Ocean, and how that may have affected conditions across the globe.

During the last ice age, which took place from 70,000 to 19,000 years ago, the climate in the Northern Hemisphere toggled back and forth between warm and cold states roughly every 1000 to 6000 years. These events, known as Dansgaard-Oeschger events, were first identified in data from Greenland ice cores in the early 1990s, and had far-reaching impacts on the global climate.

The ocean, which covers 70% of the planet, is a huge reservoir of carbon dioxide and heat. It stores about 60 times more carbon than the atmosphere, and can release or take up carbon on both short and long timescales. As changes happen in the polar regions, they are carried around the world by ocean currents, both at the surface and in the deep ocean. These currents are driven by winds, ocean temperature and salinity differences, and are efficient at distributing heat and carbon around the globe. Ocean currents therefore have a strong influence on whether regions of the world are warm (such as Europe) or whether they are not (such as Antarctica) as they modulate the effects of solar radiation. They also influence whether CO2 is stored in the ocean or the atmosphere, which is very important for global climate variability.

"Other studies have shown that the overturning circulation in the Atlantic has faced a slowdown during the last few decades," said Dr Julia Gottschalk of Cambridge Department of Earth Sciences, the paper's lead author. "The scientific community is only beginning to understand what it would mean for global climate should this trend continue, as predicted by some climate models."

Analysing new data from marine sediment cores taken from the deep South Atlantic, between the southern tip of South America and the southern tip of Africa, the researchers discovered that during the last ice age, deep ocean currents in the South Atlantic varied essentially in unison with Greenland ice-core temperatures. "This implies that a very rapid transmission process must have operated, that linked rapid climate change around Greenland with the otherwise sluggish deep Atlantic Ocean circulation," said Gottschalk, who is a Gates Cambridge Scholar. Best estimates of the delay between these two records suggest that the transmission happened within about 100 to 200 years.

Digging through metres of ocean mud from depths of 3,800 metres, the team studied the dissolution of fossil plankton shells that was closely linked to the chemical signature of different water masses. Water masses originating in the North Atlantic are less corrosive than water masses from the South Atlantic.

"Periods of very intense North Atlantic circulation and higher Northern Hemisphere temperatures increased the preservation of microfossils in the sediment cores, whereas those with slower circulation, when the study site was primarily influenced from the south, were linked with decreased carbonate ion concentrations at our core site which led to partial dissolution," said co-author Dr Luke Skinner, also from Cambridge's Department of Earth Sciences.

To better understand the physical mechanisms of rapid ocean adjustment, the data was compared with a climate model simulation which covers the same period. "The data of the model simulation was so close to the deep ocean sediment data, that we knew immediately, we were on the right track," said co-author Dr Laurie Menviel from the University of New South Wales, Australia, who conducted the model simulation.

The timescales of these large-scale adjustments found in the palaeoceanographic data agree extremely well with those predicted by the model. "Waves between layers of different density in the are responsible for quickly transmitting signals from North to South. This is a paradigm shift in our understanding of how the ocean works," said Axel Timmermann, Professor of Oceanography at the University of Hawaii.

Although conditions at the end of the last ice age were very different to those of today, the findings could shed light on how changing conditions in the may affect . However, much more research is needed in this area. The study's findings could help test and improve models that are run for both past and future conditions.

Here is part of an abstract for an international conference being held today:

"Ocean acidification (OA) in the 21st century has reached levels not seen for 55 million years. The average surface pH of the world ocean has decreased by 0.1 since the industrial revolution and is projected to decrease 0.3 to 0.4 pH by the end of this century, an up to 2.5 times increase in ocean acidity. Due to its cold water temperature, low alkalinity and rapid loss of sea-ice, the subarctic Pacific Ocean and adjacent Arctic Ocean have absorbed large amounts of atmospheric CO2 and have changed the CaCO3 system so that aragonite unsaturated states have appeared or will appear soon on a large scale. OA in the subarctic Pacific Ocean will greatly change the marine chemical environment with farreaching effect on marine ecosystems."

The melting of Greenland ice will result in a much lower albedo, and consequently a higher surface temperature for the Greenland land mass. This will modify wind patterns on and around the land mass. The more ice melts, the less it will behave as a heat buffer, and the more it will begin to behave as a heat source.

Implications:

Modification of the strength and directions of prevailing winds over North America and Europe, as well as the humidity of these air masses.

If Greenland becomes a heat source rather than a heat sink, then the north/south component of winds over the atlantic high and low pressure systems will change due to a reduction in potential difference in temperature between the mid lattitudes and the polar lattitudes, espeially the land mass of Greenland (i.e. daytime high temperature on land).

This means the evolution of major atmospheric structures, such as jet stream, troughs, and MDO will be effected heavily.

These patterns can actually change on time scales ranging from a few years to a few decades.

By changing the prevailing winds (which a major melt of Greenland ice would do due to the cycle of daytime warming of land mass) changes the direction surface waves and surface currents move in the ocean, which changes heat transport, regardless of deep currents, but certainly all working together and/or against one another to try to maintain equilibrium.

Essentially you would expect summer synoptic scale "heat waves" to form over greenland, and for example this might drive huge amounts of precipitation into N. Europe due to mesoscale low pressure systems forming on the eastern boundary of this high, and being pushed south into places like Scandinavia, England, Ireland, France, Germany, etc....and because this would be during the summer, it would likely be wet precipitation rather than snow.

Overall warming would probably drive heavy snows in winter more and more**

Winter snows could be heavier, "wetter" snows, rather than the powdery stuff, because the heated Arctic seas cool slower than the air over land masses (less specific heat capacity) therefore in this case increasing potential difference. So then you could get more heavy snowfall events during winter, even though overall global temperature would be higher, the warmer water humidifies the cold atmosphere above itself, expands that atmosphere southward, and then dumps that humidity (now depleted of it's heat potential) as rain or snow.

Understanding what will happen to Sea surface temperatures and prevailing winds in the N.E. Atlantic Ocean is interesting to me, because I have a theory that if the climate warms enough, then England, France, and Spain will start to have landfalling category 1, 2 and 3 hurricanes during September and possibly October, which they have not knowingly experienced in historical times. These storms may originate from the US east coast.

Well, it means heat can be transferred from a melted Greenland to Antarctica very rapidly, which I've always suspected anyway.

I have calculated that in worst case scenario, Greenland could melt in as little as a century, maybe even less, but it would most likely take 450 to 500 years more realistically.

Antarctica would take a minimum of several millennia to melt even in the worst case scenario.

Basically, after Greenland finishes melting, the rate of melt in Antarctica will accelerate significantly, because it will start taking up the excess heat that Greenland has been taking up.

Pretend that what you post doesnt show the world what an incompetent liar and desperately sick old man you are.

"The World has only one problem, Psychopaths. There are two basic types of Psychopaths, Social and Anti-Social. The essential feature of Psychopaths is a Pervasive, Obssesive- Compulsive desire to force their delusions on others. Psychopaths completely disregard and violate the Rights of others..

"They are absolutely the world's best manipulators, liars, and fabricators of truth [except for incompetents who may be posting here]. They do so convincingly because they believe their own lies. After all their life is nothing but a lie, a sham, how can we possibly assume they know anything different?"

You already ignore SO MUCH. Why do you need a special button for this?
.........what he's saying here is that he's hoping you WILL NOT put him on the Ignore & that you will continue reading all his name calling & foul mouthed profanity laced diatribes just so he can feel relevant on a science site.

The rights to self defense granted in the US Constitution are anathema to the Ghosty mindset, but he doesn't care it is that Constitution that has made our country the one country on the face of the Earth that everyone wants to come to before all others.

Just loving your country's Bill of Rights brands all like minded citizens a "psychopath" in the Ghosty mindset. I'd just like to see Ghosty defend himself from the bear attacks we have around my place by sitting down with that bear & reasoning with it before it makes that fatal swing to your head, or for that matter any other hostile force intent only on your destruction.

You accused me of lying and I actually sent to your goober buddy Ira copies of my diploma, a copy of the Edwards AFB base newspaper with my picture on it, and that of Pete Knight, and some Astronauts too.

I may be a goober. But at least I am not the liar or pretender. You did not get your picture took with Pete-Knight-Skippy. Your picture was of you all alone. Not with astronauts either.

You send me the newletter that said you were the college drop out. You send me a picture of a Master diploma that don't have the words Energy, or Environment, or Management on it at all. I DID call the school, the Professional Studies is a non-specialized catch-um all for adults with life time experiences. Old peoples with a lot of different jobs but with no area of expertise.

Now, Skippy, I am trying to let this rest. Quit bringing me into this and you won't hear from me anymore. You don't mention ol Ira-Skippy, and I won't mention ol glam-Skippy. Okayeei?

Gosh, Ira, you have gone from bender of truth to outright prevaricator. And you cannot debate issues, only make personal comments, hoping to sound profound, but wind up sophomoric, as others have told you.

You did not call the school, and it did not award any credits for "life experiences". You just cannot accept the fact I am real and you are a pseudonym pretending to be a cajun. The tourists might buy it, but I know better, having worked with professional engineers in the South.

But, I will put you on ignore, and stop correcting you.

You're welcome.

Iras proven himself to be an honest person here. Youve proven yourself to be a compulsive liar who makes up facts as he sees fit.

You are lying about your diploma. This is obvious. You also lied about this bullshit:

"High energy alpha cant penetrate skin.

Fallout is the major cause of lung cancer (not even on the list)

Fukushima H2 explosions can cause dirty molten Pu to prompt criticality and throw macroscopic vessel parts 130km, without leaving a crater, even tho nuke weapons cant.

There is plutonium or americium raining down on idaho.

Dried manure which you mistakenly call 'volatile solids' in many threads, is a major constituent 'high air' pollution in the central valley

Musk is not building commercial powerwalls but he is, but you know hes wasting his time because you were 'in the business'.

Youre an engineer even though you admitted you were not"

Etc

-From a very long list.

Who do you think the people here believe?
