Stop complaining about the moral decline of Western society, says expert

Good parenting used to be seen as a process of imparting self-control and social values to one's children; now it's viewed as a meaningful human relationship. Women used to be expected to stay home and raise their children; now they are regarded as entitled to pursue any career or lifestyle they desire. And sex used to be about procreation, but now it's regarded as a source of pleasure.

These trends are about morality, argues Edward L. Rubin, University Professor of Law and Political Science at Vanderbilt Law School, in his new book. But unlike many others who write about the subject, he's not bemoaning the decline of Western society or clamoring for the good old days.

"To say morality is declining is not correct," says Rubin, author of Soul, Self and Society: The New Morality and the Modern State, published by Oxford University Press. "It's changing." This moral transformation, which has occurred over the course of the past 200 years, is organically linked to the simultaneous rise of the administrative state, Rubin says.

Save your soul and serve your state

Traditional morality, which many people still regard as morality itself, is really just one particular approach, more accurately described as a morality of higher purposes, Rubin says. Individuals were supposed to direct their personal behavior toward the salvation of their soul. And they were supposed to direct their political behavior around service to the state – "ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country."

Self-fulfillment

"The new morality is based on concepts of self-fulfillment," Rubin says. "You're supposed to live the best life you possibly can for yourself, and there's essentially nothing beyond the experience of life that justifies it. It just justifies itself in terms of your own experience."

Similarly, the goal of a modern administrative state is to serve its citizens, to enable each of them to live the most fulfilling life that they possibly can. Modern morality demands that the state provide individuals with necessary service, including education, health care, and – if they are needy – subsistence and housing.

Self-fulfillment is not hedonism

Self-fulfillment is a real morality, Rubin says, with as many rules and prohibitions as its predecessor.

"It's not hedonism. It's not just live for today and eat, drink and be merry," he says. "It's live for the entire succession of todays, which often involves a higher level of planning than the morality of higher purposes. People who think morality is declining or disappearing have really just failed to adjust to this huge change in the way many people in Western civilization look at the world," Rubin argues. The discomfort they feel is the result of being pulled between the two moralities, plus the rapidity of the change.

Reinterpreting Christianity

The declining morality of higher purposes fuels both conservative politics and the traditional interpretation of Christianity, Rubin says. But as the author demonstrates in the historical section of the book, this is only one possible approach to the West's dominant religion.

"In earlier times, people understood Christianity in different terms," Rubin says. "As the morality of self-fulfillment becomes dominant, Christianity may be reinterpreted once more, in a manner that is largely consistent with the new morality. The other possibility is that it will decay.

"The new already encourages people to shop for the denomination that best fulfills their spiritual needs. In the future, they may shop among the entire range of world religions and philosophies."

Doing so requires the immoral act of plunder.

"The discomfort they feel is the result of being pulled between the two moralities, plus the rapidity of the change."

The discomfort is caused by 'experts' who support immoral acts like elevation of the state over the individual.

"morality of self-fulfillment becomes dominant,"

It is immoral to force others to obtain your self-fulfillment.

What is this? Social engineering?

God's laws and principles are ethernal and unchangeable. For them there is no limitation and fashion.

Unfortunately the world is pushed to the values of lutsifer that is called modern values, but this is the shortest path to the failed society. People should not be tolerant to iniquity in society because became his accomplices and help the father of lies to organize society in rebellion against the Creator. But we know that such people can not succeed. Selfishness, pride and vanity are impenetrable veil before the eyes.

Obviously Rubin has not spent much time studying history, ancient or modern.

Living for a higher purpose IS what leads to self-fulfillment in my opinion. If we all live as individuals only for ourselves, as I would argue we have for a while now, society becomes fractured and we become more distrustful and antagonistic toward each other. I think there is plenty evidence of that in modern American society. No government program can replace the need for (and the reward of) true kindness, compassion, and selflessness. They don't come easy nor naturally but therein lies the need for a true, binding spirituality. I do agree with the freedom and need for being able to "shop" worldwide for our religions but we also as a world society need to find the binding elements between them all instead of allowing their differences to become a source for tension, aggression, and warfare.

The Socialists have succeeded beyond their wildest dreams in destroying western society. They have succeeded so well that 99% of them will become victims of their own success in the very near future! They will become mere parakeets waiting for seed and water to be put in their cage. The 1% will be very entertained by their chirping.

You and the other folk who think you are independent have to go live in the mountains alone sometime, and see how valuable your money is int he Real World.

Show me one libertarian government. There are none, because selfishness is not a good idea. Selfishness is exactly why we have government, to keep those without Humanity from killing the rest of us for our "things".

Apr 10, 2015
Gkam your problem along with all of the other progressives is that you think that man is inherently evil. But all of a sudden, if these evil and greedy people become part of government they become caring, intelligent and benevolent. You are living in a dream world.

Apr 10, 2015
Only with a belief in God can a person hope to avoid the abuse of power that a government position give them.

I think that it was Thomas Jefferson that said the Constitution is only viable if the people governed by it believe in God.

How is a professor of law and political science an expert on morality as the headline states?

Apr 10, 2015
No, 166, YOU are the one who eschews others, afraid of them. Conservatives assume we are all selfish and nasty, and will do whatever it tikes to "win". They project their conservative character defects onto others with better character.

We assume folk are more rational, not SCARED that others are like conservatives. We assume they are as good as we are, but have different priorities.

We do not hide in Undisclosed Locations and scream "Bring 'em on!".

Apr 10, 2015
Huuum, Obama was a law professor wasn't he. The "Law" is devoid of morals there is only guilty and not guilty. Under the law you can do anything that you want and it is OK just as long as you are not proven guilty. IE, 99% of all those bankers which almost brought down the financial system did nothing wrong.

Every time socialism fails, it is blamed on the leader. USSR failed because of bad men. Pol Pot was bad. Hitler was bad. Ceaușescu was bad.

Carl Popper, among many others, have shown that the socialist system is at fault.
Most socialists are atheists yet they expect all socialist leaders and fellow travelers to be angels.
Western, free market capitalistic, constitutional republics that acknowledge individual rights are God given know people are not angels, including govt leaders, and created as system that limits power and provides many negative feedback loops to curtail the wanna-be socialist tyrants.

-So why arent you still stoning apostates, wayward womwn and insolent children? Is this just a lull in your commitment to gods laws?
Unfortunately the world is pushed to the values of lutsifer that is called modern values, but this is the shortest path to the failed society. People should not be tolerant to iniquity in society
But gods laws specifically denotes a chosen people who are afforded special dispensation in his eyes. And god also condones slavery. Why do you turn your back on gods laws? Are you just waiting for the opportunity to reinforce gods laws when secularists arent looking?

Apr 10, 2015

Depends upon The Law (Bastiat) doesn't it?

Legitimate law protects the rights of individuals and is moral.
Illegitimate law violates the rights of individuals and is immoral.

In fact one of the prime directives in socialist revolutions is the destruction of the belief in God and the destruction of the family unit. "It takes a village." to raise a child.

No, God do not condones slavery because it says "Thou shalt not steal" - slavery is theft of the freedom of one person. God allows fag, which is payment of debts of one person to another person by work and actually is practiced widely in today's world.

I have even less respect for religionists who selectively interpret their book, or who do not know it.

"However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way." -Lev25:44-46

"The servant will be severely punished, for though he knew his duty, he refused to do it. "But people who are not aware that they are doing wrong will be punished only lightly. Much is required from those to whom much is given, and much more is required from those to whom much more is given." (Luke 12:47-48

"When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl's owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment. " -Exodus 21:7-11

Slavery is clearly protected in the bible under 'property rights' which ryggy is so adamant about.

"President Washington said much the same thing in his "Farewell Address": "Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. . . . And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion."2 Because the American republic is a free republic, therefore, it was designed for a religious people. That is the proper context in which to understand Adams' 1790 comment on the French Revolution, "I know not what to make of a republic of 30 million atheists."3 By then Adams was already on record predicting the collapse of the French revolution."

Show me one libertarian government. There are none, because selfishness is not a good idea. Selfishness is exactly why we have government, to keep those without Humanity from killing the rest of us for our "things".

I think you are confused by the role of government. Selflessness and compassion have nothing to do with government programs or taxes. They are things that happen between communities, families, and human beings.

Apr 10, 2015
"Absent a Creator who was the Author of nature, and who made man in His image, Adams wondered, what could justify the proposition that all men are created equal? In a striking passage, Adams declared that "In spite of Bolingbroke and Voltaire, I will insist that the Hebrews have done more to civilize men than any other nation." And he continued, "If I were an atheist . . . I should believe that chance had ordered the Jews to preserve and to propagate to all mankind the doctrine of a supreme intelligent, wise, almighty sovereign of the universe, which I believe to be the great essential principle of all morality, and consequently of all civilization."5"
http://johnadamsc...n-adams/

The alternate hypothesis leads to what socialism brings, tyranny of a mob, or tyrant over other people. People become slaves to the state (which is controlled by other people.)

Apr 10, 2015
Oh, really? You shut off your compassion, like a faucet?

The rest of us may be Humanists, and not able to become so selfish.

Healthy family grown handicapped individuals and transmit Christian values to the next generation, which are the basis for developed and just society in which people live in love and harmony with each other. Christian society is based on freedom of choice and the love of God, his law and others people. Communism is based on a sense of revenge of the weak in spirit to free, bright and creative personalities that move the world forward. Communist wants to rise above the others not by becoming as good and as others but by lowre them its slavish nature. Because only people with slave nature wnast to enslave free people. They are the biggest dictators because they do not love neither themselves nor others.

That is the proper context in which to understand Adams' 1790 comment on the French Revolution, "I know not what to make of a republic of 30 million atheists."3 By then Adams was already on record predicting the collapse of the French revolution."
The french revolution was the beginning of the end of church domination of the state.

"The dechristianisation of France during the French Revolution is a conventional description of the results of a number of separate policies... The goal of the campaign was the destruction of Catholic religious practice and of the religion itself."

"the Revolution profoundly altered the course of modern history, triggering the global decline of theocracies and absolute monarchies while replacing them with republics and democracies... Historians widely regard the Revolution as one of the most important events in human history."

-Obviously it was a resounding success.

And how much"belief" is required?

A professor of law and politics should have studied John Adams.

" Adams said several times that the best definition of a free republic is "a government of laws, not of men."7 Note he did not say "a government of laws." Law was a necessary, but not sufficient condition for the rule of law. The laws had to be reasonable or they were arbitrary, and arbitrary government was government of men,{ObamaLaw} not laws. In his main work, The Defence of the Constitutions, Adams quoted Cicero discussing "Those laws, which are right reason, derived from the Divinity, commanding honesty, forbidding iniquity; which are silent magistrates, where the magistrates are only speaking laws." In sum, laws, "as they are founded on eternal morals, are emanations of the Divine mind."8"

Apr 10, 2015
"Elsewhere in the Massachusetts Constitution, Adams addressed that question: "A frequent recurrence to the fundamental principles of the constitution, and a constant adherence to those of piety, justice, moderation, temperance, industry, and frugality, are absolutely necessary to preserve the advantages of liberty, and to maintain a free government."10 The fundamental principles of American government, best outlined by Congress in 1776, are the keystone of American education. But without training in the moral and religious virtues, such education will fail. In our day, as in his own, John Adams challenges us to pay due attention to what is best in our republic and in ourselves."

John Adams was correct.

How could Rubin be a professor of law and politics without studying those who created the US Constitution?

"What influence, in fact, have ecclesiastical establishments had on society? In some instances they have been seen to erect a spiritual tyranny on the ruins of the civil authority; on many instances they have been seen upholding the thrones of political tyranny; in no instance have they been the guardians of the liberties of the people. Rulers who wish to subvert the public liberty may have found an established clergy convenient auxiliaries. A just government, instituted to secure and perpetuate it, needs them not." james madison

"Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise." madison

"But how has it happened that millions of fables, tales, legends, have been blended with both Jewish and Christian revelation that have made them the most bloody religion that ever existed?" JOHN ADAMS

"Can a free government possibly exist with the Roman Catholic religion?" JOHN ADAMS

"Christians who are slaves should give their masters full respect so that the name of God and his teaching will not be shamed. If your master is a Christian, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. You should work all the harder because you are helping another believer by your efforts." 1 Tim 6:1-2

Xianity itself is slavery to martyrdom.

"Surrendering to God's agenda may mean sacrificing our children—or our goods, reputation, comfort, convenience, and a whole list of other things we hold so tightly in our hands as well as those things we hope and plan for."

22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved."

Rygg, tell me it isn't so, but I fear that the indoctrination of the American public is pretty much complete. The Boomers are the last of a dying breed and they have been replaced by the "Programmed" which the Boomers allowed our educational system to create. "Millennials simply don't know that socialism means the government owning everybody's businesses. "

Show me one libertarian government.

Why? I am quite fond of a simple Constitutional Republic form of Government that understands how to balance a budget. One in which the Constitution actually is adhered to and the laws apply to all and Government power is not wrongly expanded by inserting words and phrases that never existed in it. One where the Constitution is amended in the proper fashion, should it need changing.
Prior to the progressives perverting the Constitution, this country was on a track for continued excellence. Back then, people actually cared for one another and lent a helping hand when others needed it. Back when the dream, was alive and well. Not so much now, now you are screwed unless there is Gov handout pillaged from someone else should you be in need. The writing is on the wall and it is FORWARD over the fiscal cliffs.
Here is a question, what happens when the Government handouts and interest on the debt, exceeds the incoming pillaged revenues

In reality our vets that served, that have been disabled and that have died in Iraq and Afghanistan have been told that this was just a big mistake, oops sorry. Before the 'progressives' destroyed them there were hundreds of mutual aid societies that provided all sorts of services, including health care.

Yup, it is a virtual horse race whether pedophilia or bestiality will be accepted by society first.

Apr 10, 2015
History lesson: Older people have been complaining about modern society even in ancient Greek civilization and probably even before that.

That said, the warnings usually come from long experience and are meant sincerely. In other words, it is not wise to ignore them. You may have good reason to think that the activities in question are not a threat, but one should at least consider the question and not merely shrug while morality burns. Those who advocate complete hedonism and anything-goes type of morality will learn eventually that there is a cost.

Further it has nothing to do with religion, and everything to do with maintaining a civil society.

I'm not surprised that a a brief and shallow article by phys.org has brought out comments by the few ideological driven readers. I've ordered the book but the few quotes from Rubin do match the data.

Morality does change over time. Slavery and child labor has been the moral norm in the past. Racial, gender, ethnic, and class superiority has a long history of being the moral norm and is still basic to far too many of the right, religious and political.

How moral was it that age of consent was 13 or 11, or in the case of Maryland, 9?

I know most readers here are older(50+) than the general public and many don't have much contact with younger than thirty crowd but I can report they take moral issues very seriously. Support for abortion on demand has slipped among that age group not because they are against abortion or premarital sex but because they recognize the importance of acting responsibly by using effective birth control.

If I had adhered to the "morals" of the church I attended as a child I would have grown up hating Catholics, Jews and believing my wife was lesser than me, to always be subservient. How in the hell is that moral?

"The french revolution was the beginning of the end of church domination of the state."

But which church dominated the state? The true Church of God is trying to proclaim the truth to people and to free them from the shackles that the father of lies and his pilgrims want to put people. He hates people because they are created in the image and likeness of God, and he does not have this privilege. And using people with slave mentality and various sociopaths for his cause. Read about ancient Babylon and the Babylonian whore and you will clarify many things. If you know human history will know future of people because it tends to repeat. Therefore, people of unclean intentions are trying to rewrite and falsify history. But lies are only temporary. The truth is eternal and unbreakable because it is part of God's nature. He controls everything in this world.

Yup, it is a virtual horse race whether pedophilia or bestiality will be accepted by society first.

Actually, MR, it was more accepted in the past via a "look the other way" mentality. We (as a society) are in the process of learning to NOT do that when it comes to harming children or animals.
It just SEEMS more prevalent in that we are more cognizant/aware of instances of it.
However. That said, if a shepherd sleeps with one of his sheep and the sheep let's him - even appears to enjoy it, how would you describe THAT relationship?
(I would have to say it is a healthier one than sneaking in and impregnating that sheep while it is asleep)
Think about that the next time you hear someone say "the Lord is my Shepherd..." or some minister of god talk about his "flock"...

Why must the top law enforcement official have to remind his staff not to break the law?
After all, Holder has been acting illegally for over 6 years so why should those who work for him not follow his example?

Slavery and child labor has been the moral norm in the past.

Thanks to Christians, this has changed.

Yet they WERE Christian and did so BECAUSE of their faith.

The UK abolished slavery in the early 1800s because of Christian pressure. Yet England enslaved the Irish in the 1600s with no qualms.

Most of those Christians were also socialists and union members. Weren't you earlier asserting that Socialism causes moral decay?

Or do you mean we should thank Christians for the Republican efforts to legalize child labor again? (Seems modern Christians affair with capitalism brought about a change of mind). I can see how enslaving kids will really help the coal industry--those little toddlers can really fit into the narrow coal seams. And if they get crushed, so what, not much money has been invested in little kids so they're basically expendable.

Sorry, Rygg, but you must include the WHOLE comment or your response lacks validity.
Yet they WERE Christian and did so BECAUSE of their faith.

Not all of them were. And a majority of it was from pressure from their wives...

2 different centuries. By placing them backwards in context to one another you, once again, lack validity.
Also, enslavement has different meaning to different individuals. For instance, you seem to feel enslaved by the current system. Whiner.

Yes. And it is true.

Socialists lie to Christians asserting that the state should take the role of Christian charity and too many Christians say the ends justify the means.
I recall how the Salvation Army refused a donation from a lottery winner.
Even the first Christian settlers to the US tried socialism and nearly starved to death. They quickly abolished their commune and flourished.

The US has a socialist president violating immigration laws and enticing children from Central America to risk a long, dangerous journey to cross illegally in the US.
The US socialists promote the murder of children before birth and use plundered wealth to pay for it.
How is it that socialists help children?

"Cruz last July spoke about the problem, calling it a "direct consequence of President Obama's lawlessness" in a radio interview with The Right Scoop.

At that time, he said children were "being handed over not to well-meaning social workers but to hardened transnational global criminal cartels who are physically assaulting these kids, sexually assaulting these kids."

More than 60,000 minors crossed into the U.S. in 2013 alone, The Hill reports.

"the left has a "fear and hatred of Christianity" on Monday.

Rush said that he thought it was odd that people on the left seem to believe Pope Francis I agrees with them on many issues, "even though they hate religion, even though they're frightened of it, even though they're scared to death of it, which is the real truth of it all, they so desperately want the pope to be one of them. It's one of the most amazing psychological things, I think. Modern leftists, particularly modern really extreme leftists — I mean, most of the culture war that is occurring in this country and has been going on for 30 years, if the truth be known, at the root of it is a fear and hatred of Christianity and religion in general, Christianity specifically, but religion in general.""

"Americans are vacating progressive pews and flocking to churches that offer more traditional versions of Christianity," Shiflett asserts. This author is not subtle, and he gets right to the point: "Most people go to church to get something they cannot get elsewhere. This consuming public--people who already believe, or who are attempting to believe, who want their children to believe--go to church to learn about the mysterious Truth on which the Christian religion is built. They want the Good News, not the minister's political views or intellectual coaching. The latter creates sprawling vacancies in the pews. Indeed, those empty pews can be considered the earthly reward for abandoning heaven, traditionally understood.""

"Many customs, traditions and moral values have been discarded without an appreciation for the role they played in creating a civilized society, and now we're paying the price.

What's worse is instead of a return to what worked, people want to replace what worked with what sounds good, such as zero-tolerance policies in which bringing a water pistol, drawing a picture of a pistol, or pointing a finger and shouting "bang-bang" produces a school suspension or arrest.

Seeing as we've decided that we should rely on gun laws to control behavior, what should be done to regulate clubs and hammers? "

"Last Tuesday, a little less than two years after Stokes was gifted a heart, he-allegedy-broke into an 81-year-old woman's home and, upon being discovered, fired gunshots at her. He-allegedly-fled the scene in a car that police later determined had been stolen. Police pursued Stokes in a high-speed chase. After a few miles Stokes-allegedly!-hit a pedestrian, whereupon he crashed the stolen car and died. (We don't have to cover ourselves on this last bit; he is indisputably dead.)

There's a great parable wrapped up in this story. And yet in the public consciousness, the death of Anthony Stokes barely registers. He's not even a footnote. But he should be. Because he got a heart that could have gone to someone else if not for the online mob and charges of racism. He got a heart-and someone else did not-because of the culture war. And he wasted it."

It isn't a lie. The reason the state took over welfare is that religious groups couldn't do the job-- many still went hungry.

Even the first Christian settlers to the US tried socialism and nearly starved to death. They quickly abolished their commune and flourished.

Socialism hadn't even been invented yet. They may have been practicing one of the economic systems that came before Capitalism because they believed Capitalism was evil, a view widely held by Christians until fairly recently. Doing work for a capitalist enterprise was equated to prostitution.

"In "Submission," a near-future France slouches toward theocracy. French society is not browbeaten by militant Islam, but instead finds itself sighing with relief as it relinquishes its stressful libertinism for a lifestyle with reassuring rules. French secularism and the loss of the historic Catholic faith has left the French open to new, more robust metaphysical beliefs. Polygamy, especially, affords men marital and sexual fulfillment. Shariah-mandated social subsidies afford women security and liberation from the pressures of trying to combine career and family."

That's what socialist do. Proclaim the 'progressive', Regulatory state is required for a civil society.
It's demonstrably false and they know it. Which is why socialists must lie.
Socialism, as documented by Mises, Hayek and Bastiat is when any state uses force to exceed its legitimate role of protecting private property.
The state is not society and fails miserably when it forces its version of society on the lives of others.
'Liberals' were always saying the 'right' can't legislate morality. And they were correct, yet the modern socialist state is legislating morality daily.

Apr 14, 2015
The reason the state took over welfare is that religious groups couldn't do the job-- many still went hungry.

Millions are still starving while the state welfare pays for lap dances and drugs.

Thousands were dropped from welfare in Maine when Maine forced welfare recipients to work, look for work or volunteer.

A surfer dude was on welfare buying lobster tail.

Poverty levels have been unchanged after billions $$ have been spent over 50 years.
The state took over welfare to control the lives of others, just like a heroin dealer.

Apr 14, 2015
Socialists legislating morality:

"Also featured are plans to introduce a tax on plastic bags, a Robin Hood tax on city trades, a wealth tax of 2 percent on the top one percent, and an unhealthy food tax; the reintroduction of the fuel duty escalator which sees fuel tax rise above the rate of inflation year on year; and a hike on income tax at all levels, council tax and VAT on aviation. They also want to increase corporation tax to 30 percent, making the UK one of the least competitive countries for business.

"Taxation is not just a matter of getting in the money for the common good; we can use it to shape behaviour," the party proudly states."

I don't why you mentioned tv, most of it is crap, I rarely watch it.

I knew Christianity enough to preach the Sunday night service as a 17 old college freshman. It was in Vietnam when I came to understand the character of "God", a man made invention, and became an atheist.
