Java designer resigns from Oracle

Former Sun Microsystems technology executive James Gosling, designer of the popular Java computer programming language, has resigned following Sun's takeover by Oracle.

Gosling, who developed Java in the early 1990s and served as the chief technology officer for various Sun products, announced his resignation in a post on his personal blog on Friday.

"Yes, indeed, the rumors are true: I resigned from Oracle," Gosling wrote.

"As to why I left, it's difficult to answer: Just about anything I could say that would be accurate and honest would do more harm than good," he said.

"I don't know what I'm going to do next, other than take some time off before I start job hunting," Gosling said.

Gosling updated his biography to describe himself as "blissfully unemployed."

His departure follows that of Jonathan Schwartz, the chief executive of Sun Microsystems, who resigned in January.

Business software giant Oracle completed its acquisition of Sun, a one-time Silicon Valley star, on January 27.
