Facebook unplugs "I Hate Muslims in Oz" group

Facebook has done away with a Muslim-bashing group that had been set up at the popular social networking service.

"We disabled the 'I Hate Muslims in Oz' group because it contained an explicit statement of hate," the California-based website said Thursday in response to an AFP inquiry.

"Where Holocaust denial groups have done this, and been reported, we've taken the same action."

maintains that it strives to protect free speech rights of users to express potentially offensive views while preventing the website from being used as a stage for hateful or threatening commentary.

Facebook maintains that it's a neutral platform for people to connect, communicate and share aspects of their lives.

The website says that it eliminates illegal content and material that violates its terms of service. Maintaining that the Holocaust never took place has not been deemed hateful, in and of itself, by Facebook.
