Proposal launched for a cleaner 2025

A diverse group of activists, politicians and businesses is proposing the United States get 25 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2025.

The Christian Science Monitor reported that the coalition, which includes governors, industry leaders, farm groups, county officials and environmentalists, has dubbed the proposal "25x'25."

The ambitious goal of the proposal, introduced in both houses of Congress, is to secure one-fourth of the nation's total energy from sources such as solar, wind and biomass. The effort was launched in response to rising gas prices, increased evidence of global warming and war in the oil-rich Middle East, the newspaper said.

The Monitor reports that the proposal has a growing number of congressional co-sponsors.
