In Brief: France Telecom joins China wireless group

A unit of France Telecom has reportedly joined an organization based on China's home-grown 3G wireless technology standard.

China's Xinhua news service reported Friday that France Telecom Beijing R-and-D had become the first foreign firm to join the TD-SCDMA Forum, an indication that the European wireless operator is open to third-generation wireless telecom technology.

Beijing is expected to award 3G licenses soon that will be likely to call for TD-SCDMA rather than the other major international technologies.

Forum Secretary General Wang Jung told Xinhua that France Telecom's decision to join his group was an indication that TD-SCMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) was gaining acceptance in the international wireless industry.
