If global warming is real, why was it so cold and snowy last winter?

Americans view global warming by what they see outside their windows and not scientific evidence, according to a University of Michigan survey.

While a majority of Americans still believe that is occurring, the cold and snowy winter of 2014 created more disbelievers, according to the National Surveys on Energy and Environment.

The survey is a joint effort of the Center for Local, State, and Urban Policy at U-M's Ford School of Public Policy and the Muhlenberg Institute of Public Opinion at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa.

"This decline is significant because it comes after more detailing the effects of climate change has been released to the American public," said Barry Rabe, U-M professor of public policy and director of the Center for Local, State, and Urban Policy.

Against this apparent disconnect, the Obama administration continues to advance policies through executive actions including the recently released regulations on coal-burning power plants.

"The divide in on global warming could complicate implementation of proposed federal efforts to address this issue," Rabe said.

While 55 percent of Americans think temperatures have gone up over the past four decades, this marks the lowest level recorded in the survey since spring 2011. One in three Americans surveyed said there is no solid evidence of global warming.

And 38 percent of those who do not believe global warming is happening attributed this belief to their personal observations of weather.

The random telephone survey of 798 American adults was conducted March 24-April 9, 2014. The survey had a margin of error of 3.5 percent.

Someone should study the attitudes of readers of this forum. It seems to me they are more apt to more scientifically-minded and critical thinkers. If the evidence truly suggests catastrophic climate change, these readers should be among the first to endorse such conclusions.

If we were currently in the beginning of another Little Ice Age, it would still be easy to statistically show a significant warming trend over the last 400 years.

Conclusion: statistics can be used to tell any story you want to tell.

Truly, this warns of the inadequate education most of those questioned received...

FWIW, we began watching the new version of 'Cosmos', but had to give up; we were laughing too much. It was so slowly and clumsily paced, so aimed at dozy pre-schoolers of all ages, and patronising withall that it was, to put it kindly, embarassing. Carl Sagan must be spinning in his grave...

Instead, we watched the latest monthly episode of 'The Sky At Night'. Thankfully, that longest-running UK Astronomy series has survived the passing of its oft-eccentric presenter, Sir Patrick Moore. The current presenters briskly and so-lucidly crammed a vast amount of context-rich Lunar info into the 20 min programme, while leaving just enough time for observational highlights of the month. Job done.

Just wondering, are you stupid every day or just today? Global warming is a FACT, and human contribution is a FACT. The only thing that is unfortunate is that all of the focus is on pollution only. Whereas, the true culprit is overpopulation. There are 7 BILLION humans, of which 5 BILLION are teens and adults. Every human radiates 24/7 almost 100 Deg. F. Take 100 deg. F times 5 BILLION, what do you have? Yep, 500 BILLION DEGREES F 24/7 on the planet that never before existed. Now, add in the MILLIONS of miles of road/parking lots, buildings, car/truck/jet engine heat, heaters, ovens, lawnmowers etc. and in just the past 100 years we have thoroughly changed the climate. Oh, and of course the Sun is more active than ever to help precipitate I doom. The true intergalactic spelling for STUPID is H-U-M-A-N!

Dems are trying to legislate a narrative change hurting the American people in the process! All Democrats and supporters here and abroad, are trying to flood the media with hysterical climate change & global warming alarms to take the heat off Dem candidates in the November 2014 and 2016 elections due to the train wreck of Obamacare! They shout, scream, cry, make outlandish claims and won't stop till after the elections! Poor Democrats! The tsunami cometh!

Reid once said: 'You can go outside and spit and have the same effect as doubling carbon dioxide.'

Reid A. Bryson holds the 30th PhD in Meteorology granted in the history of American education. Emeritus Professor and founding chairman of the University of Wisconsin Department of Meteorology—now the Department of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences—in the 1970s he became the first director of what's now the UW's Gaylord Nelson Institute of Environmental Studies. He's a member of the United Nations Global 500 Roll of Honor—created, the U.N. says, to recognize "outstanding achievements in the protection and improvement of the environment." He has authored five books and more than 230 other publications and was identified by the British Institute of Geographers as the most frequently cited climatologist in the world.

Err.....
Because it wasn't....... GLOBALLY.
The clue is ..... in the name.
Now I know it is nigh on impossible for our US Deniers (vast majority of all deniers on here).
But - no the US is not the globe. In fact even the contiguous US had a near average winter temp, considering the W and S states warmer than ave conditions.

Please note the large areas of the NH where it was ~2C warmer than ave last Dec-Feb - see Alaska/Greenland/Europe/Siberia - and where it was ~4C warmer (parts of the Arctic).

http://data.giss....;pol=rob

Also, note that the bulk of the Arctic is not measured. What's your guess then? based on the above map. Warmer or colder?

Get a grip and use some of the intelligence that (your imaginary friend) gave you.

My guess is you have again used skewed data.

Here's the same map with a more contemporary base period. All of a sudden, Large swaths of cooling pop up all over!

It's NOT about how global warming aint real because it was cold and snowy last winter, you were mislead by the title, quite understandable.
It's actually about you, yes you know who you are, it's about how some "view global warming by what they see outside their windows and not scientific evidence".

Well, this is tame. Ah, but it's still early yet. Expecting more of the "You're the moron," "No, you're the moron," "NO, you're the moron, idiot." kind of discussions. Then a moderator will step in and declare you both right. I like comic relief.
The polar vortexes experienced in North America in 2014 can be explained by convective heat transfer. I'm sure everyone is familiar with Newton's law of cooling. The blast of cold air forced out of the arctic was a heat transfer coefficient. Applying the differential equations in Fourier's law as if the atmosphere was a finite closed-loop system you will find that the data supports a warming trend rather than a cooling trend.
I wouldn't be surprised by anything 30-40% of the people in Michigan or Pennsylvania believe. Fortunately, the laws of physics remain unmoved by public opinion.

I don't believe in anthropogenic origin of global warming, but I don't think, that the cold winters (and hot summers followed with fires) really contradict the hypothesis of global warming. The hotter the surface of Earth is, the larger is the temperature gradient across the atmosphere, the more the vertical circulation is enforced in it into account of this horizontal one (in similar way, like for water inside of pot, heated from the bottom). This leads into enforcing of continental weather with huge annual temperature differences above continents. The same effect will make the existing convective cells at the atmosphere unstable, which will enforce the Rossby waves at their boundaries. These waves will enforce the continental weather even more: it will bring the polar winds above continents during winter and hot tropical air during summer. I do perceive these supplementary effects even less pleasant for civilization than the simple steady growth of global temperatures.

Actually it's the opposite.
AGW is warming the Arctic at a greater rate than the temperate zones, and so the horizontal temp gradient is lessening. This leading to a reduced Polar jet strength and an enhanced N/S extent of Rossby waves. Therefore there is more "stuck" weather (eg hot/cold, wet/dry).
The SH is different with the Antarctic holding fiercely to it's cold (no room to give reasons - but entirely understandable). Winds there are increasing - hence one reason why sea ice extent is increasing ( I said extent, not volume).

Yeah, the AGWites refuse to believe the scientific evidence.
