Gore says 'democracy has been hacked' at SXSW

Mar 13, 2012 By JAKE COYLE , AP Entertainment Writer

(AP) -- In a wide-ranging talk about the Internet and government, Al Gore urged the techie crowd at South By Southwest to use digital tools to improve government.

The former vice president sat for a conversation with co-founder and Web entrepreneur Sean Parker on Monday at SXSW in a flashy tete-a-tete that drew an audience of thousands at the Austin Convention Center and more viewers via a .

"Our democracy has been hacked," said Gore, framing Washington gridlock and the effects of special interest money in digital terms.

To fix what he called a no-longer functional U.S. government, Gore urged the audience to begin a new "Occupy Democracy" movement. He pushed for the creation and implementation of and social media to "change the democratic conversation."

Gore talked of a "Wiki-democracy" of "digital flash mobs calling out the truth" and "a government square that holds people accountable."

Parker, who was famously portrayed by Justin Timberlake in "The Social Network," has gotten into politics by investing in Votizen, an online network of voters that leverages social networks to campaign for their issues. He also sits on the board of NationBuilder, which also seeks to organize political change.

Parker said he believes social media is only its infancy of what it can do to spur action. He cited the Internet rally against the Stop Online Piracy Act as a hint of the power of social networks. He called the protest "Nerd Spring," alluding to the Arab Spring uprisings in the Middle East.

Both Gore and Parker derided the dominant role of television in elections and political dialogue. Change, Parker said, won't come from within the political system.

To applause, Gore added; "I can confirm that."

Gore urged the audience to begin a new "Occupy Democracy" movement.
I think the Occupy Wall Street movement protesters are going after the wrong crowd. A new movement called OCCUPY WASHINGTON should be formed instead. I other words, go after the people who are behind the problem before they bankrupt America and other countries.

Parker said he believes social media is only its infancy of what it can do to spur action.
The politicians would love for protestors to use the Internet instead of people camping out in front of their offices, homes, clubs, restaurants and last, but not least, the schools were their children attend. That alone should wakeup those corrupt politicians rather quickly. Go after the ones who have or keep on voting to raise the debt ceiling. The jerk Rick Santorum would be one of the first on my list! Then Obama, George W. and so on.

Lets consider this: there are 535 members of the US Congress, 1 Vice President, 1 President and around 15 Cabinet members who serve under the President. Then we have around 312 million people who live in America. Not all members of Congress have voted to raise the debt, but it must be more than half in order to pass a bill in order to raise the debt ceiling. Since the year 2000 Congress has been on a spending spree raising the debt ceiling year after year until three years ago. Three years ago there has been no budget and Congress including the President has been waiting until the last minute after the funds have been exhausted to get a budget bill passed through Congress, or they threaten to close down government, and stop pay bills.

So my question is how long are 312 million people going to allow around 552* politicians to continue to head the U.S. down the path toward bankruptcy?

Do not the 312 million people who live in the U.S. know they are being duped?

*This is not an accurate number of US politicians since 2000 who have voted to raise the debt ceiling.

So you would have preferred the Republican solution of cutting off government assistance to the unemployed and to those on the borderline of losing their homes.

The results would have been a vast increase in the homeless living on the street and potential starvation in America, and the decent of the failed American state into a decades long grand depression.

That would have been my choice for America.

USA has been bankrupt four times. Every seventy years, which is the legal limit of a bankruptcy. You had the constitution, which actually LIMITS YOUR RIGHTS to that on the contract, then a civil war 70 years later, then the engineered crash of 29 with the New Deal, and now the latest eternal warfare. Each time a stricter clampdown by the City of London ensues. The last incident was taking down your Twin Towers. Just to show who's boss. You'll likely get a city nuked in 2071 but be too thick to see any connection yet again. By then they'll probably blame it on the Internet, and blame some goat-herding robot.

"Obama raided the Social Security funds to pay for those unemployment checks." - Tabula

The funds coming into Social Security were never designed to sit in a bank account, neither could they have done so without dramatically damaging the economy.

The correct intent was to use those funds to foster economic growth and thereby provide sufficient future funds for the required payouts.

Hence nothing was raided.

You do realize don't you that using Social Security funds to pay for the general day to day operation of the government started under the Reagan Administration.

Doing so is what kept his deficits under 300 billion per year.

That was the case before Social Security was created. As a result, American elderly now seldom find themselves homeless and living on the street.

We've moved beyond representative government, we just don't know it yet. All we need is a bedrock bill of individual rights and we can give direct democracy a go. There has to be a balance though.

I see both sides here. Representation has devolved into "How do I get enough money to win the next election". Direct democracy will quickly devolve into "how much can I extort from my fellow citizen". We honestly can have our cake and eat it...if and only if we're wise in the implementation of digital democracy...

It is the Liberal Republicans who have joined the Liberal Democrats in increasing the national debt and dipped into the Social Security trough and left their I.O.U. notes that were never repaid. Conservative Republicans and Conservative Democrats were against increasing the debt. They have been made to understand by their constituents that they got their job on the promise that they would balance the budget and not do the old "tax and spend" trick that is getting increasingly unpopular with the majority of Americans. The corruption in Washington DC is a time-honored and entrenched, smoke-filled backroom good ol' boys tradition that has been a trademark of the Liberal Democrat and Liberal Republican kabal whose own uninformed constituents return them to Congress over and over. Former governor Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania was such a corrupt politician. The people of Pa. are glad to be rid of the bum, but have replaced him with yet another bum. The problem is that people hardly ever learn>

Hah. . .Social Security is a joke. It's hard to live only on $1200USD a month which is taxable income when you also have to pay for your rent or mortgage and/or real estate taxes, plus pay your phone and electric and food bill, not to mention pay your Medicare bill and buy gas and fossil fuel to keep your house warm, etc. etc.
Social Security was originally only to be used as a SUPPLEMENT to your life savings. It was only supposed to help people for incidental expenses. . .NOT to live on exclusively.

Do you then advocate a barter system where people don't pay with money, only with goods and services to reciprocate with goods and services of an equal value? That is not easy.
RitchieGuy
1 / 5 (2) Mar 13, 2012
For one thing, weights and measures would have to be carefully regulated so that there is no cheating, and that entails a bureaucracy to ensure that scales and weights are not changed and are the same everywhere. Then you must have accountants to keep records of goods and services so that everyone is equal and well compensated fairly.
RitchieGuy
1 / 5 (2) Mar 13, 2012
Bartering was a good system, but there was a lot of cheating involved in some cases. Not always, but there are always a few rotten apples, etc.
In a bartering society, there would be no need for banks and bankers, no stock exchange, but there would still be personal investment in what you buy and sell which would really mean a trade between two people for goods and services of equal value
RitchieGuy
1 / 5 (2) Mar 13, 2012
The problem would be who determines the value of each goods and service. And there is the problem of finding those who are willing to trade with you unless they are looking for your particular goods and services, and you, theirs.
Barter system is the only other alternative to banks, and it necessitates everyone to become a manufacturer of goods, or a provider of a service.
Do you really want that?

Sorry RichieTard, but standard weights and measures are not a part of the Libertarian/Randite Free Market system. In such a system no one would be forced via regulation to use standards of weights and measures, although they could do so voluntarily if they wanted.

Similarly the state would be barred from certifying professionals like Doctors, and anyone would be able to simply print themselves up a diploma, proclaim themselves to be a doctor and start practicing medicine, or bridge inspection, food inspection, pharmacology, or anything else.

Forced accreditation is anti-freedom.

The bankruptcy was declared on 9/11 when an new US government was posted by your true rulers. So I would chill about any immediate impending doom&gloom as the restructuring is part of a 500 yr. plan. You can see the implementation with homeland (Hitler's favorite word) insecurity and sooner or later they'll be knocking on your door at night asking your family if you're suspicious. Whatever president is elected has to follow the script. Even Ron Paul would instigate a massive austerity program which the banksters love. It's good you bring up this point, for the schools and media are designed to brainwash. Fact is, it is IMPOSSIBLE for the US to operate without debt. Since the US government does not make money, but delegates that to the Bank of England, every dollar is BORROWED from the Rothschilds banksters at interest. Simply by holding US dollars you owe tribute to the Vatican banksters. You can buy gold or housing to stave off this hemorrhaging, but the average person must have a NET EQUITY loss since he is RENTING HIS MONEY from loansharks. No, the future of the US is set upon destruction because a colander can never be seaworthy. It just floats for a while before inevitably sinking. "All of this action will cause the dollar to depreciate. The Chinese Yuan alone accounts for 20% of the Federal Reserve Banks trade-weighted dollar index, and Asia ex-Japan accounts for another 20%. Regardless of the other G4 currencies perform, that means that a conservative 7% annual appreciation in Asia will drive a minimum 3% annual decline in the trade-weighted value of the dollar. Even worse is that this cause a broad loss of confidence in the dollar, driving the dollar lower across-the board. And this doesn't even account for the multiplier effect that net exporters will no longer need to indiscriminately accumulate dollar-denominated assets. China, itself, has unloaded part of its massive hoard of US Treasury securities for five consecutive months." http://www.forexb...yuan-rmb

The best answer IS to go on an austerity program in the U.S. Charity organizations like Catholic Charities and Protestant churches can take care of those who are in need of food, clothing, housing, etc. But of course, Obama won't allow that because he NEEDS the American populace to be dependent on the government programs for everything in return for their votes.
On the one hand, Socialist Obama wants to raise taxes on the American worker to support and pay for his welfare state. But on the other hand, Obama drives private businesses away with excessive regulations that make no sense and are over and above the necessary regulations to ensure the safety, health and fairness to all workers. He also wants to deprive the rich of their wealth in order to stay popular with the uneducated and Liberal dirtbags whose votes he desperately needs to stay in the White House.

Liberal Left and Liberal RINOs would keep their hands off private industry, and the tax and spending of extra billions of dollars to expand the government and add many more to the welfare rolls, Obamalama and his crony Capitalists are ensuring the future destruction of the United States.
When the American populace who bought into his hope and change lies finally wake up and smell the $hit coming out of the Obama administration, they will rise up and throw all of the Liberal Left and the Liberal RINOs out of public office, and FORCE the austerity measures to preserve the Republic.

It will probably mean a civil war in America, but the end will justify the means. Obama, if reelected, will promote the abolishment of the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution because he will want to disarm Americans so that we can't defend our rights. But he will fail.

"So your only solution is for the U.S. to go bankrupt." - Tabula

America is already bankrupt.

Both spending cuts and tax increases are necessary. The economy is too fragile to endure either right now.

Provided that the Republicans can't continue their campaign of talking the U.S. economy into the toilet, the cuts and increases should start next year and ramp over time as the economy continues it's recovery.

Health care should be nationalized so that it's cost can be reduced.

RichieTard is correct on this issue.

America's standard of living can not be maintained, and Conservatives must make Americans significantly poorer for their slave master corporations to compete on a global scale.

Our government is broke. Per http://online.wsj...178.html
"The unfunded liabilities of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid already exceed $106 trillion. That's well over $300,000 for every man, woman and child in America (and exceeds the combined value of every U.S. bank account, stock certificate, building and piece of personal or public property)."

Expect changes or worse.

Prison time, or worse, for the Washington politicians who got us there would be in order.

Interesting. They were only around 60 trillion 4 years ago.

But when you are pulling numbers out of your backside, I suppose any number will do.

In any case, Social Security is quite safe as long as the Federal Government can pay it's obligations to it.

And those obligations will be reduced as the retirement age is increased to compensate for the now longer lifespans of the beneficiaries.

As for Medicade and Medicare, the coming socialization of American medical services will take care of most of that. Primarily by reducing costs, but also by defining what is appropriate end of life care.

When can we expect results?

Only fools would continue to elect thieves, so there is every reason to believe that your revolution will never come.

Does the TSA know you? If not, they do now.

You mean the Department of Homeland Security.

Vendicar Decarian you sound like a foreigner with a chip on their shoulder just like both George W. and Obama. It appears people with a grudge can be very destructive. Whats your angle to destroy America?
