Book lists rare species found in Scotland

Scientists are lauding a new book from the Scottish Natural Heritage that catalogues more than 1,000 rare species found in the Cairngorm Mountains.

The book, published Monday, lists more than 20 plants, invertebrates and fungi species from the Cairngorm National Park that are newly discovered in Britain and some new to the world, the BBC reported Monday.

"Nowhere else in Britain, and some would argue in Europe, will you find so much diversity of wildlife in such a confined area," said SNH Professor Des Thompson, a contributor to the book.

SNH officials say they hope the book -- the product of 20 years of studies by 35 scientists -- will encourage additional research in other European wildlife areas.
