In Brief: S. Korea to launch comm satellite Aug. 10

South Korea plans to launch a communications satellite in August that will be used by both the military and civilian sectors.

A formal cooperation agreement on the Mugunghwa 5 satellite will be signed Wednesday by Korea Telecom and the Defense Ministry.

Launch is set for Aug. 10 from a floating launch pad in the Pacific operated by Sea Launch in Long Beach, Calif.

The Alcatel-built satellite will be positioned at 113 degrees east and will provide command-and-control, intelligence and other functions to Korean ground and naval forces as well as civilian services for Korea Telecom.
