VIB ( the Flanders Institute for Biotechnology) is a research center with 1100 scientists, professionals and support staff and headquartered in Gent, Belgium. VIB's main objective is gathering innovative basic knowledge on the normal and abnormal or pathological processes occurring in a cell, an organ, and an organism (humans, plants and micro-organisms) utilizing gene technology research methods. VIB has made many breakthrough discoveries. VIB operates in four Flemish universities, Ghent University, K.U. Leuven, University of Antwerp, and Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

Stripping down bacterial armor: A new way to fight anthrax

A new study led by Dr. Antonella Fioravanti in the lab of Prof. Han Remaut (VIB-VUB Center for Structural Biology) has shown that removing the armor of the bacterium that causes anthrax slows its growth and negatively affects ...

New chemical tool to block endocytosis in plants identified

Plant cells absorb many important substances through a process called endocytosis. In plants, endocytosis is essential for nutrient uptake, passing on cellular signals and plant-microbe interactions. However, the vital nature ...

Edible antibodies to treat and prevent gastrointestinal disorders

Therapeutic antibodies are increasingly being used in the clinic for the treatment of diseases. Yet, oral to gut targeting of antibodies remains a challenge due to their inability to survive digestion and reach gastrointestinal ...

Plant immunity cut to size

An international team based in Ghent, Belgium (VIB-UGent Center for Plant Systems Biology) and Basel, Switzerland (University of Basel), found a link between a class of enzymes and immune signals that is rapidly triggered ...

Steroid synthesis discovery could rewrite the textbooks
