Excessive alcohol use continues to be drain on American economy

Excessive alcohol use continues to be a drain on the American economy, according to a study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Excessive drinking cost the U.S. $249 billion in 2010, or $2.05 per drink, a significant increase from $223.5 billion, or $1.90 per drink, in 2006. Most of these costs were due to reduced workplace productivity, crime, and the cost of treating people for health problems caused by excessive drinking.

Binge drinking, defined as drinking five or more drinks on one occasion for men or four or more drinks on one occasion for women, was responsible for most of these costs (77 percent). Two of every 5 dollars of costs—over $100 billion—were paid by governments.

"The increase in the costs of from 2006 to 2010 is concerning, particularly given the severe economic recession that occurred during these years," said Robert Brewer, M.D., M.S.P.H., head of CDC's Alcohol Program and one of the study's authors. "Effective prevention strategies can reduce excessive drinking and related costs in states and communities, but they are under used."

Excessive alcohol consumption is responsible for an average of 88,000 deaths each year, including 1 in 10 deaths among working-age Americans ages 20-64.

Excessive alcohol use cost states and the District of Columbia a median of $3.5 billion in 2010, ranging from $488 million in North Dakota to $35 billion in California. Washington D.C. had the highest cost per person ($1,526, compared to the $807 national average), and New Mexico had the highest cost per drink ($2.77, compared to the $2.05 national average).

The 2010 cost estimates were based on changes in the occurrence of alcohol-related problems and the cost of paying for them since 2006. Even so, the researchers believe that the study underestimates the cost of excessive drinking because information on alcohol is often underreported or unavailable, and the study did not include other costs, such as pain and suffering due to -attributable harms.

Excessive alcohol consumption is responsible for an average of 88,000 deaths each year

Does that statistic count the 10,000 or so from alcohol related car accidents, or not?

Now surely, you must know that local governments promote alcoholism? This is literally a proven fact. They promote alcohol sales in order to promote other types of sales, at least in their mind.

For example, a restaurant which does not serve alcohol may feel pressured to serve alcohol due to loss of customers.

A town which had a blue law still in effect in Louisiana recently caved and lifted the bans in order to promote increased business for it's restaurant industry, but we all know that in reality this was done to allow a new bunch of bars and clubs to open up and sell to binge-drinking Louisianian teens and young adults.

City governments profit by attracting outsiders, and one way to do that in the existing "Culture of Stupid" is to sell as much alcohol as possible, which they do.

Costing $250 billion per year?

Why....that *can't* be true...we have the "greatest nation on earth"....we have the best, most rational leaders on Earth....I mean, allegedly...

It's promoted on the Super Bowl to kids and teens. Even got collectible cans for your favorite team or player. Of course these ads target kids and teens, they already have the adults addicted, so who else would they be targeting?

Federal Government has the power to regulate professional sports, due to crossing state lines, under the Commerce Clause...all the professional sports promote alcoholism through commercial advertisements and sponsors, which is where the billionaire owners get a large portionof their revenues to pay for their own profits and for the absurd salaries of the players.

All of this is orchestrated to send a message to young people: "Drink up, and drink a lot, doesn't fill you up (binge drink please) never let's you down(a total lie)."

Prohibition was the right thing.

Unfortunately, the government caved to the Kennedy family and the moonshiners and legalized it again.

Right now about 5% of americans use each major illegal drug. About 40% regularly use each major legalized recreational drug, and as much as 85 to 90% drink alcohol at least some of the time. Imagine how many lives would be saved if you banned alcohol. Even if the crime rate DOUBLED, you'd still be saving, with the statistic you gave, about 70,000 to 80,000 lives per year.

Any rational leadership would realize this if they read these statistics.

But our leaders don't want that. They want eveyrone drugged and dead or dying.

It's part of their perverted plan, since they are owned by the Kennedy and other brewery families.

I live in one sick, twisted, and perverted country. Sad thing is most of the other countries are worse, but it looks like we're trying to play catch-up by any means available.

Alcohol kills about as many Americans each year as the Flu and Pneumonia combined.

People who promote or sell this poison are Murderers.

Breweries in the US kill more people than Saddam Hussein did in his entire reign...every year or two...

Breweries in the US kill more people than the "evil" Assad Regime in Syria.

Now we have several states legalizing "recreational Marijuana". Another mind-numbing substance to addict people to, so they can profit by taxing it.

I guess people aren't dumb enough yet. Need to knock a few more IQ points off (research shows prolonged use of Marijuana lowers IQ by about 7 points, or about half a standard deviation).

There's Federal laws banning Marijuana, but our evil hypocrite president refuses to enforce the law...which he took an oath to uphold and enforce.

Soo, at the rate civilization is currently de-volving, we'll have another set of people, up to about 40% if other drugs are predictors, addicted to yet another mind-numbing, body killing substance. And you state and local government people will love it...while insurance and medical costs and car insurance costs and such will go up even more long-term.

It's sad how stupid people are, it really is.

Oct 16, 2015
Here's the hypocrisy.

A judge orders a drunk to attend AA or rehab or whatever.
Same day the government issues another permit to sell alcohol to drunks.

What's the difference between a brewery chemically poisoning an American with alcohol vs the Assad regime chemically poisong people with nerve toxins?

Give up?

Assad's nerve toxins kill faster and are more humane than a person gradually dying from liver disease and other organ failure caused by alcohol.

If Attorney Morris Bart can sue semi truck companies for 500k to 1 million for traffick accidents, whey don't they sue alcohol companies or hundreds of thousands or millions for every death or injury caused by alcohol related accidents and disease?

Why the hypocritical double standard?

Reckless endangerment: A person commits the crime of reckless endangerment if the person recklessly engages in conduct which creates a substantial risk of serious physical injury to another person. "Reckless" conduct is conduct that exhibits a culpable disregard of foreseeable consequences to others from the act or omission involved. The accused need not intentionally cause a resulting harm. The ultimate question is whether, under all the circumstances, the accused's conduct was of that heedless nature that made it actually or imminently dangerous to the rights or safety of others.

By this definition, every brewery in the US should be prosecuted each and every tiem a person is killed or injured as a result of their product, which they have "disregard for foreseeable consequences" regarding the overall detrement to society and the deaths, injury, and illnesses of people both who use their product and are injured by those who use their product.

Oct 16, 2015
Therefore, as I see it, selling alcohol is a crime by this definition of reckless endangerment, as is selling cigarettes and recreational marijuana.

It is not just nor fair to charge only the drunk driver with a crime, or only the drunk who beats his kids and wife with a crime....after all, the brewery and the bar or other vendor sold the drunk the product which caused or heavily contributed to the violence, injury, or death...

Moreover, it is never fair to the person killed or maimed by said drunk driver or drunk assailant. That person or their survivors should be able to sue alcohol breweries, vendors, and state and local governments for negligence/reckless endangerment.

So why are the breweries above the law and not prosecuted for these heinous crimes against humanity?

I should contact the big lawyers around here.

The trucking industry is small potatoes. The real money for attorneys ought to be in prosecuting alcohol related businesses.

Oct 16, 2015
So technically it's already illegal to sell alcohol (and tobacco) under the definition of reckless endangerment, they just aren't yet specifically banned by name.

But the state and local governments would never prosecute this way, the lawyers like Mike Hingle or Morris Bart would have to do this in civil courts. State and locals make too much money of the tax dollars and "slap on the wrist" ticketing system, and the tourism (hotel rooms and stuff) which the alcohol culture of Bourbon Street encourages, attracts, and promotes.

Man, attorneys advertise to the wrong group of victims. They need to be adverising to the victims of drunken driving and drunken assault, and they need to be suing anyone involved in production, transport, and selling the product that caused or contributed to the incident, from brewery to final point of sale, and everything between.

It seems very much to fit the definition of reckless endangerment.

Oct 16, 2015
Doctors and coroners should start listing cause of death on alcohol related deaths as "Murder/Manslaughter", and hold everyone from brewery, transport, and point of sale as accomplices in the murder.

This culture is insane.

you people think I'm the crazy one....Jesus Christ, look around at everyone else. You're all a bunch of raving lunatics.

Every time an alcoholic beverage is brewed, transported, sold, or consumed, it violates my human rights to "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness".

Oct 16, 2015
you people think I'm the crazy one....Jesus Christ, look around at everyone else. You're all a bunch of raving lunatics.

Invoking the Lord's name in vain I see. But, he did change water into wine or is that wine into his blood?

Drunkenness is a sin, therefore it is extremely, extremely unlikely that Jesus would have made an alcoholic substance.

Oct 16, 2015
80,000 deaths a year means nothing to any of you, now does it...

Alcohol killed 8 times as many people each year in the US as Ebola killed in Africa in a 2 year outbreak.

Why no emergency response to this plague taking place right here?

Hab. 2:15 "Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness! Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered" the cup of the LORD's right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful spewing shall be on thy glory."

Apparently God doesn't like people making money nor sexual advances via alcohol.

What is the "cup" in the Lord's Right Hand?

Rev. 14:10 he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed in full strength in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.

Oct 16, 2015
Do you still think Jesus turned water into alcoholic beverage? your ignorance is evident to anyone reasonably skilled in debate on this topic.

You have been lied to by both false prophets and pastors in the Catholic church and parts of the protestant church, and you have most especially been lied to by the Kennedy family and other major brewery families....AND YOU LOVE TO HAVE IT THAT WAY.

Isaiah 30:8
Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD:
Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits: Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon:Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant. And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters' vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not spare: so that there shall not be found in the bursting of it a sherd to take fire from the hearth, or to take water withal out of the pit.

Returners, you're reminding me of an interview of Charlie Manson I watched years ago. He started off seeming to be almost normal, and progressed fairly quickly to absolute lunacy. I've read a number of your posts on these pages, (the sheer number of them is one indicator) and over and over the Charlie Manson pattern re-appears. The string above is a prime example. A top illustration of how beneath a seemingly ordered and intelligent mind a seething, raging psychosis can be hidden.
Typical of those depending on self delusion as a substitute for sanity.

Actually, the majority of what the Catholic church does has absolutely no basis in either scriptural teaching nor Jewish tradition either. It actually has more in common with Greek and Roman paganism, and they directly violate several of Paul's instructions on the proper ordering of church gatherings as well, in addition to all those other things.

I don't recognize the position of "Pope" as a scriptural ministerial office, and least of all the last 2 popes counting this one.

Cut the quarter trillion off the military budget to cover it. War is the most abused and costly drug in America. We could use more well funded alcoholics and less well funded homicidal maniacs.

Making bad personal choices is something we all do, blaming anyone else for the outcome is childish and weak.

Problem is they promote drunkenness. They literally promote it.

Also, did God task you with bringing his word to the world, or do you choose to do this on your own to show your love for him?

The Great Commission ring a bell?

For now, let us say that my purpose in the "body" is to expose fakes, which doesn't exactly go well with the rest of the body, much of the time.

Oh, Majority rule is a problem. Once you give something as a "right" in a democracy, you can basically never take it back, even if it becomes necessary for the good of all people. They will riot. They will civil war. Case in point, gun ownership and it's virtually non-regulation under present mis-interpretation of the 2nd amendment, giving everyone the "right" to own a weapon of murder with almost no real restrictions.

more people are killed yearly by hammers, cars, cell-phones and driving, screwdrivers, and spoons (each) than guns

ya gonna try to ban cars, spoons and hammers too?
technically, they're far more dangerous than a gun... kill more people
ya gonna ban pencils for spelling errors? ya gonna ban silverware to combat the obesity problem?

As it stands in the US, any attempt to restrict any dangerous or immoral behavior gets immediately stricken down by the Supreme Court based on the basis that it "infringes on someone's constitutional rights"...typically the right to spread homosexuality, or the right to own any number of firearms without cause or provocation or restriction, or the right to be completely free from any legal inspection unless the police already have evidence of a crime ahead fo time (present version of the 4th amendment allows fraudsters, kidnappers, and murderers to get away with their crimes for decades at a time)...

And fixing any of this stuff...making even the slightest tweak to be someone sane...requires a 75% majority popular vote, which I assure you teh knee jerk "your taking away my rights" response, even from people who disagree with the action in question, will strike it down.

It will take GENERATIONS to fix the moral and social quagmire that was made in the past 50 years.

By the way, everybody violates the ten commandments. that's the problem. It's called "Sin".

Hillary loves the "right" to kill babies.
Kroger promotes and now funds transexualism.-
-I wonder if the fund their straight employees legitimate medical emergencies by a similar fanancial amount, or if they are just about promoting sex changes? Sex changes cost a lot you know.

Pretty soon the left will want the "right" to fuck goats in public, and burn babies on altars, who knows what else...it'll get through on a re-interpretation of or the other of the amendments somehow.. They already sell their baby's body parts for profit, which Hillary defends.

It takes about a decade or two for each major stage of wickedness to progress, but we'll see how far it goes. I can only hope that someone, somewhere puts a stop to it and soon. We are nearing the point where historical civilizations fell apart due to internal moral strife and corruption, which in many cases we've actually gotten worse than them.

so it only applies to you

When you find yourself proven wrong, be sure it isn't at the moment the angels throw you in the lake of fire.

especially in a faith, by it's very definition
epic fail, bubba

The definition of the word translated "faith" has been hi-jacked by lying atheist fools, such as yourself.

One word is "Pistis" which is roughly "conviction" or "confidence".

The tack-on "without evidence" or "not based on proof" thing found in a dictionary is in no way related to the historical use of the word "Faith".

It's a lie someone like you added to dictionaries.

Oct 16, 2015
Acts: 1:3 To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God.

This is a matter of eye witness, literally "proof", not your alleged ignorance or lack of proof.

At least 4 different authors wrote first-hand accounts in 4 different texts.

The fact that it happened 2000 years ago before today can't be helped. It doesn't discount the validity of eye-witness accounts just because you have a bias against "religion" or "faith".

1- prove there are angels: show me one
2- i am not a xtian
3- can you prove your religion, who stole it's dogma from other sources, is the "real" one without simply saying "it is the real one' or referring to it's own dogma/book as a source? that would go far to prove at least that someone other than biblical delusional idiots believe in it's authority
and as BS noted above, if you want to talk about numbers, Buddhists far outnumber xtians, thus they MUST be more "correct" than you!

"faerie farts cause tornado's, whereas unicorn burps cause AGW"
At least 4 different authors wrote first-hand accounts in 4 different texts
1- author attribution also not accurate
2- writing hundreds of years after the fact means what?
3- why did they delete the apocryphal books?

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

You know, If you want to hear from God, just pray and ask God to reveal himself to you.

Want an Angel to come explain stuff to you better than I can? Pray, ask God to do that. If you really want to know the truth anyway.

And don't ask small either. Ask for Gabriel or Michael or one like them to come and reveal them self to you and explain all this to you.

There is the case of Cornellius who saw an angel after praying.

I don't control the will of God, but I know if you seriously want to find God all you have to do is ask.

I will pray for all of you, because I understand what the problem here is there is no easy solution to convince anybody, least of all in this modern time.

I also will pray for correction for myself. my own lack of patience with people is disgusting to me.

Unfortunately, the government caved to the Kennedy family and the moonshiners and legalized it again.

Ending prohibition put the Kennedy moonshiners out of their profitable business. It's well known that those who deal in illegal drugs, want those drugs to remain illegal, because that way, they make a lot more money. That is also why brewers/distillers of alcohol want marijuana to remain illegal.

While this study calculates the economic drain of excessive alcoholic consumption, it doesn't measure the obvious benefits of alcohol consumption from the point of view of those who drink. And there are benefits, otherwise, why would they drink?

Oct 19, 2015
Wow, the Teetotallers come out of the woodwork on this article! Everyone knows that people have a psychological need to "let loose", and you cannot take that away from them. Did we learn nothing from the Prohibition Era? Lets see, what happens when you take something that millions of people do, and make it a crime? You have millions of criminals. You have a black market popping up. You fund criminals with money that used to go to Taxes. All your ideas about alcohol being so bad, well, understand that to not have alcohol is much, much worse.
