AMD Releases New Desktop Processors

AMD today introduced desktop processors designed for users seeking the ultimate in energy-conscious or high-performance computing.

The new energy-efficient 45-watt AMD Athlon 64 single-core processors 3500+ and 3800+ can help consumers and businesses save energy and experience significant performance-per-watt benefits. And for those who crave high performance, AMD has also introduced the AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor 6000+.

These new processors are expected to be immediately available in the channel and from OEMs including Alienware, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Systemax and Voodoo, representing the latest in a succession of innovations based on the award-winning AMD64 processor architecture.

The new energy-efficient AMD Athlon 64 processors 3500+ and 3800+ are based on 65nm technology. Using the reduced line widths enabled by 65nm technology, AMD can produce more processors on a 300mm wafer while manufacturing processors designed for low-power consumption, reinforcing AMD's commitment to energy-efficient computing. AMD processors based on 65nm technology can deliver outstanding performance and enable small form factor system designs.

"Customers continue to demand solutions that focus on low-power consumption and quieter operation, with an eye to sleeker, more efficient PCs," said Jim McGregor, principal analyst with In-Stat. "Advances in energy-efficient computing go beyond offering end users lower energy bills, they can enable OEMs and system builders to deliver smaller, more innovative form factors to market."

Desktop systems based on AMD64 dual-core technology, including the AMD Athlon 64 X2 processor 6000+, benefit from AMD's open platform approach that enables superior technologies designed for outstanding mainstream PC experiences with leading-edge graphics performance, high quality video, and minimal idle power draw. These systems can also power Microsoft Windows Vista and run the visual, networking and security enhancements now available in the Vista operating system.

Pricing for the 65nm energy-efficient AMD Athlon 64 processors 3500+ and 3800+ are $88 and $93, respectively in 1KU. Pricing for the new AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor 6000+ is $464 in 1KU.
