Briefs: Nokia wins Myanmar network deal
Nokia won a radio-network contract from Myanmar's Warid Telecom.
The network will be launched later this year and will cover the Dhaka administrative district.
"We chose Nokia to supply its state-of-the-art radio network in the Dhaka capital area because we are confident that Nokia's solutions will help us to respond to the customer requirements in the rapidly growing Bangladeshi market. We have built a best-in-class network in Pakistan, and we have the same ambition here. For us to build a strong market leadership in Bangladesh, it is vital that we have a partner who does not only have a strong technology roadmap and global experience but a proven track record and a long-term commitment to this country," Warid Chief Executive Officer Bashir Tahir said in a news release.
"Although we are a late entrant, Warid Telecom has an aggressive roll out plan that will see us reach the entire Bangladesh population within one year. We will also ensure that we offer our Bangladeshi brethren a wide range of differentiating services that will add value to their lives, as well as redefine customer service in the country," he added.
Nokia estimated that the number of mobile subscribers will rise to 3 billion by 2008, of which 80 percent are seen coming from fast-growing markets such as Myanmar.
