Ohio CO2 sequestration test well completed

The U.S. Department of Energy said an 8,000-foot-deep well has been completed in Ohio in preparation for a geological sequestration field test.

The Midwest Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership recently completed drilling the well at a FirstEnergy Corp. plant near Shadyside, Ohio, located along the Ohio River near Moundsville, W.Va.

Geologic sequestration -- the permanent storage of CO2 in oil and gas wells, unmineable coal seams, saline reservoirs and other geologic formations -- is part of a broad approach for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired electric power and similar plants.

The Ohio field test is designed to determine the feasibility of storing CO2 in deep saline formations in the Appalachian Basin.

After the test has been completed, the 1 1/2-mile-deep well will be plugged or capped, officials said.
