In Brief: Micron boasts 8-megapixel image sensor
Micron Technology of Boise, Idaho, has produced the first 8-megapixel image sensor in the standard optical format used in most digital cameras.
The company said Thursday the breakthrough would lead to a new generation of digital cameras capable of ultra-fast image capture and high-resolution stills along with high-definition video capture.
The result, Micron said, would be fewer blurred pictures caused by jitter and sharper images at faster speeds.
The senor is the first 8-megapixel in the popular 1/2.5-inch optical format and is the result of 1.75-micron pixel design.
Mass production of the sensor is expected to begin next year at a price range yet to be determined.
