Is punishment as effective as we think?

A game to study human behavior has shown punishment is an ineffective means for promoting cooperation among players. The result has implications for understanding how cooperation has evolved to have a formative role in human ...

Photoelectrode that can harvest 85 percent of visible light

Scientists have developed a photoelectrode that can harvest 85 percent of visible light in a 30 nanometers-thin semiconductor layer between gold layers, converting light energy 11 times more efficiently than previous methods.

Hawaiian fruit flies had multiple ancestors

A team from Hokkaido University and Ehime University has discovered that Hawaiian drosophilids (fruit flies) had plural ancestors that hailed from continents, refuting the "single Hawaiian origin" hypothesis.

Putting the pressure on platinum

Hokkaido University researchers have synthesised a uniquely structured platinum-based superconducting material.

New species discovered in Antarctica

A team of Japanese scientists has discovered a new species of polychaete, a type of marine annelid worm, 9-meters deep underwater near Japan's Syowa Station in Antarctica, providing a good opportunity to study how animals ...

Diverse populations make rational collective decisions

Yes/no binary decisions by individual ants can lead to a rational decision as a collective when the individuals have differing preferences to the subject, according to research recently published in the journal Royal Society ...

New record set for carbon-carbon single bond length

Hokkaido University researchers have synthesized an organic compound with a longer bond between carbon atoms than ever before—exceeding the assumed limit for carbon-carbon single bond (C-C) lengths. The researchers termed ...

Electron sandwich doubles thermoelectric performance

Researchers more than doubled the ability of a material to convert heat into electricity, which could help reduce the amount of wasted heat, and thus wasted fossil fuel, in daily activities and industries.

Shell-swinging snails knock out predators
