China to build moon station in 'about 10 years'

Beijing plans to send a manned mission to the moon and to build a research station there within the next decade, state media reported Wednesday, citing a top space official.

China aims to achieve space superpower status and took a major step towards that goal when it became the first nation to land a rover on the in January.

It now plans to build a scientific on the moon's within the next 10 years, China National Space Administration head Zhang Kejian said during a speech marking "Space Day", the official Xinhua news agency reported.

He also added that Beijing plans to launch a Mars probe by 2020 and confirmed that a fourth lunar probe, the Chang'e-5, will be launched by the end of the year.

Originally scheduled to collect moon samples in the second half of 2017, the Chang'e-5 was delayed after its planned carrier, the powerful Long March 5 Y2 rocket, failed during a separate launch in July 2017.

China on Wednesday also announced its Long March-5B rocket will make its maiden flight in the first half of 2020, carrying the core parts of a planned space station.

The Tiangong—or "Heavenly Palace"—will go into orbit in 2022, the China Manned Space Engineering Office said.

It is set to replace the International Space Station—a collaboration between the United States, Russia, Canada, Europe and Japan—which is due to be retired in 2024.

Beijing last week also said it would launch an asteroid exploration mission and invited collaborators to place their experiments on the probe.

The current Chang'e-4 moon lander carried equipment from Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden.

China now spends more on its civil and military space programmes than do Russia and Japan, and is second only to the United States. Although opaque, its 2017 budget was estimated at $8.4 billion by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

You can do anything you set your mind to when you have vision, determination, and an endless supply of expendable labor.

China was depicted, in the recent SF novel 'Red Moon' water, using that South Pole base to deny lunar water ice to other nations. Chinese experiments, spread over the crater basin, would become
'damaged' by any harvesting activities-according to their interpretation of current space treaty.

China has unfriendly obnoxious behavior with almost all countries on earth. I am not sure who will cooperate with them on the Moon.

America has none of that, as well as a ever shrinking intellectual capacity.

Hence it's spectacular failure and it's coming Civil War.

The world is laughing.

And they are still vastly less offensive than the Failed American State who's coming civil war is imminent.

The world is laughing.

I really like how they poke the space area antagonistic US on the ISS ending US wants.

But mostly I like the confirmation of lunar sample return. The Chang'e-5 is not very exciting as such, it is still a near side sampling of potentially Imbrium ejecta contaminated reference material. But the Chang'e-4 mission set up a far side landing infrastructure (L-2 halo, IIRC, orbit communication satellite) and proved that concept, and Chang'e-6 seems to be planned as a far side sample return of uncontaminated material.

Lunar samples uncontaminated by later ejecta could date the large lunar craters, and verify/reject the troubled Late Bombardment theory.

You can do anything you set your mind to when you have vision, determination, and an endless supply of expendable labor.

Just like all space nations when they built the ISS then. Without expendable labor you would not have a market competition and without the latter you would have nothing much, which China belatedly discovered.

Read the article, many do. And many say the same on US across the board, or at least haphazard, politics of attacking China, even in space matters. China is becoming the new superpower in economics after becoming that in population, and US does not like that.

No one likes any of those when they play we-are-larger-bullies, but when they promote growth (such as China's support in Africa or new "Silk Route" in Asia).

And of course Enlightened nations do not like the non-democracies like China on principle and on observed atrocities against their own population. That said, US is not very Enlightened, still kills its own people for various crimes (despite being cruel, error prone, useless and costly), when will it chuck the Bronze Age morality?

We hold our noses and take their money.

Not really. That grifter buffoon US has as president and his beloved oil buddies in Saudi Arabia appears according to mainstream media to have allowed respectively financed the current attacks on the internationally acknowledged government in Libya. After we already had Yemen.

Then we have the US White House attacks on sexual health care as limiting US international help, which can contribute to millions dead - because of that famous Bronze Age mentality again.

Murderous, meddling gits.

China is trying to export its huge population. They're even emigrating to Africa. The Moon makes perfect sense.

Moonwalker and space artist Alan Bean dies

These Moonchines have put this Martian mars base in perspective
if
after our second moon landing in November 1969
in 29 May 2018 Alan Bean died aged 86
little did he know he was this dying breed of moonwalkers
where no one has moonwalked since 1972
so
after 50 years this dying breed of moonwalkers
might
be resurrected
in these Moonchine moonwalkers
in another 10 years
as in 2029 years there might be a new breed of moonwalkers
as
to these Martian marswalkers we have to master this Moonchine first

"It is set to replace the International Space Station"

Ridiculous; China has nothing to do with the ISS and the partners to the ISS have nothing to do with the Tiangong "heavenly palace," which in fact is actually a replacement for their last space station, not coincidentally also called Tiangong "heavenly palace," that crashed north of Tahiti, a year ago, on April 1, 2018, April Fool's day.
