Hybrid electric vehicle project announced

Two U.S. research organizations have signed a three-year agreement to assess the commercial feasibility of using plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

The Electric Power Research Institute and Argonne National Laboratory will evaluate using such hybrids from environmental, cost, design and marketing perspectives. The engineering and technical studies will be conducted at the two organization's research facilities in Palo Alto, Calif., and Argonne, Ill.

The U.S. Department of Energy said the project will also include an assessment of potential social benefits, including reductions in imported petroleum-based fuels, enhancement of U.S. energy security and air quality improvement.
