In Brief: Rackable launches 273-tera storage servers

Rackable Systems Monday announced the launch of a new line of data-storage servers capable of holding up to 273 terabytes of information.

The S6026 storage server is designed for back-to-back mounting that provides the processing capability of 56 cores in one cabinet and can store up to 273 terabytes.

CEO Tom Barton said in a news release that the system will provide storage with a smaller footprint at prices as low as $2 per gigabyte. The units themselves start at $26,000.

Barton maintained, however, that many data centers are overpaying for storage capacity and could realize savings through the S6026's scalability and lower power requirements.
