Briefs: Polycom certified Defense Dept. PBX1

Polycom said Wednesday it had received Defense Department PBX1 certification for its Internet Protocol phones and Sphere Communications' PBX systems.

The certification means that the products are acceptable for deployment in what the Pentagon considers "mission-critical command-and-control environments."

"Polycom and Sphere offer a standards-based, flexible solution that enables our DoD customers to enjoy excellent sound quality within an IP PBX solution customized to fit their specific requirements," declared Polycom Vice President Sunil Bhalla.

The certification comes as the U.S. military transitions to broadband communications systems for voice, data, imagery and other services.

The Polycom-Sphere line includes desktop IP phones equipped with software that can be upgraded and open solutions that can handle 30,000 ports per system.
