AMD, lead sponsor at WCIT

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. upgraded its sponsorship level for the 2006 World Congress on Information Technology.

The company, one of two leading companies in microprocessor development, made the announcement Friday.

As a Pinnacle Sponsor for the event, the company will be providing AMD Personal Internet Communicators throughout Internet stations deployed by WCIT at the Austin Convention Center as well as a PIC to every registered full-conference attendee.

The PIC is one of many products that the company is offering as part of its 50x15 Initiative, which hopes to connect 50 percent of the world's population to the Internet by the year 2015.

"AMD is looking forward to providing the delegates at WCIT 2006 with an update on the extraordinary progress we've made in transforming the 50x15 vision into reality," William T. Edwards, AMD's senior vice president and chief innovation officer, said in a news release. "The growing portfolio of solutions we and our partners now offer is making a real difference in the lives of people everywhere."

The WCIT, which focuses on IT policy and the future of technology in social and economic development, will take place this year in Austin, Texas, May 1-5 and draws about 2,000 global leaders, company executives, researchers and decision makers.

Speakers will include Gen. Colin Powell, Dell Inc.'s Board Chairman Michael Dell and Intel's CEO Paul Otellini, among others, including AMD President and Chief Executive Officer Hector Ruiz.
