Briefs: France Telecom to research mobile security

France Telecom has entered into a research-and-development venture with STMicroelectronics aimed at creating new wireless security products.

The companies said Thursday they would start the venture off by working together on definitions for the architectural solutions that will be used in next-generation mobile platforms.

"The final objective is to define a global trusted platform architecture," the statement said.

The R&D venture will examine mobile-device components, including operating systems, application processors and contactless interfaces.

A focus will be the use of high-capacity SIM (security information management) cards that use PINs and other functions to prevent the unauthorized use of a cell phone or other wireless gadget.
