Briefs: India telecom spectrum issue break

Allocation of India's telecom spectrum may become a ministerial-level issue in the near future, it was reported Thursday.

Press Trust of India said the Department of Telecom appears ready to go along with a plan to form a "group of ministers" (GoM) to resolve the allocation issue, which has issues of overlapping jurisdiction complicating the process.

Sources said Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran was convinced of the need for a GoM after intervention from the Planning Commission and the prime minister's office.

If established, the GoM would facilitate a plan between Maran's department and the Defense Department over frequencies that the military would have to give up.
