Briefs: China Unicom makes major smartphone order
China Unicom has ordered 150,000 smartphones manufactured by Qiao Xing Universal in a deal worth $108 million.
Qiao Xing said in a news release Wednesday that the order calls for the CECT CoolPAD 728 model phone, which is billed as the world's first dual mode and dual call-waiting smartphone.
Shipping is scheduled to begin early next year, and Qiao Xing officials said more orders from China Unicom were expected.
"We have achieved great success through our cooperation with PALM, MiTAC and Microsoft, in the field of smartphones," observed CECT Chairman Wu Zhi Yang. "Through cooperation with these famous companies, we are able to continually improve our research and development capacities and expect more success in carrying out our established 'High-end Mobile Phone Strategy."
The CoolPAD is indeed high end, with a dizzying array of features, including the capability of taking two incoming calls simultaneously from both GSM (global system mobile) and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) environments.
