Iridium sees satellite growth in aviation

Iridium Satellite said Wednesday demand for satellite communications continues to grow rapidly in the aeronautical sector.

The company said that the number of aircraft equipped with its satellites has more than doubled over the past 12 months. Iridium said that it has more than 5,000 subscribers in the aviation market.

Some of its recent customers include airlines El Al, NetJets, PT Travira Air and Caribbean Sun as well as helicopter fleets.

"We have seen a major shift in the type of Iridium user over the past year as more air transport carriers and specialized aviation operators use Iridium for operational communications and flight-following," Don Thoma, executive vice president, said in a news release.
