New single-shot X-ray technique makes magnetic image

(Phys.org)—Scientists working at SLAC's Linac Coherent Light Source have captured the first single-shot X-ray microscope image of a magnetic nanostructure and shown that it can be done without damaging the material.

European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser tunnel construction completed

The European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser (European XFEL) reached an important milestone: the construction of the network of tunnels, which total nearly 5.8 kilometers in length and extend 3.4 kilometres from Hamburg-Bahrenfeld ...

Revealing a pollutant's Achilles' heal

Nitric oxide (NO) is a versatile free radical that plays central roles in the environment as well as living organisms. At low concentration in the human body, for example, NO protects organs against pathogens by acting as ...

Free-electron lasers reveal detailed architecture of proteins

(Phys.org) -- In the centennial year of Max von Laue’s discovery that X-ray diffraction can be used to unravel the atomic architecture of molecules, a new approach to the determination of high-resolution structures has ...

Biochip measures glucose in saliva, not blood
