Briefs: XO expanding U.S. fiber-optic network

XO Communications said Monday it was deploying new equipment along its U.S. long-haul fiber-optic network that will double the network's capacity.

The project calls for use of the Infinera DTN optical network to upgrade the long-haul network that serves the millions of miles of metro fibers stretched across the United States.

Beefing up the 18,000-mile long-haul network will make it possible for XO to offer high-capacity DS1 through OC-48 bandwidth on inter-city data services on a broader basis.

"Rising market demand for high-capacity Internet Protocol-based and transport services requires faster response times to deliver capacity when and where customers need it," XO Vice President Randy Nicklas said at the CompTel Convention in San Diego. "This major initiative optimizes the value of our network investment."

Infinera said its DTN products will enable XO to better monitor the network and manage bandwidth and customer traffic at any location on the system.
