Briefs: Support for certified e-mail grows

Certified e-mail should encourage people to use the Internet more to do business, a research group reported.

The Washington-based non-profit Center for Democracy and Technology said in its latest report on the subject that the system "responds to a real need. The cryptographically verified certified mail messages should make it possible for consumers to identify and trust the legitimate transactional messages they receive from companies with which they do business."

The CDT pointed out that certified e-mail could be used against phishing and other forms of Internet fraud.
