Traffic flows on France-Singapore cable

A new undersea cable is delivering voice and data traffic across more than 12,000 miles from France to Singapore.

A launch ceremony was held in Dubai Tuesday for the SEA-ME-WE4 submarine cable, which was built by 16 global telecom companies and delivers bandwidth to Western Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

"We know how important it is to deliver critical Internet Protocol, data and voice communications services to all regions of the world for our customers," said Fred Briggs, president of MCI Operations & Technology. "This new cable system will give our customers the bandwidth, flexibility, route diversity and fast service activation needed to compete in today's environment."

MCI said the cable network has a terabit design with an initial capacity of 160 gigabits per second and room for expansion. It runs parallel to the earlier SEA-ME-WE3 cable, which will continue to carry traffic from MCI and other operators.
